Team member Andy Downton has recently been fishing 'The annual Gillingham Festival' and here is how he got on-
The Gillingham Festival is always a highlight of my year, and this time I was fortunate to be paired with Guy Manton for the Chancey Pairs. Day one put me on the River Stour at Sowley on Peg 1—a flyer with bream potential. Having not fished a river in over seven years, I was eager to get going. The first hour went smoothly, but the weather soon turned foul. Heavy rain drenched my glasses, making it impossible to see, and thick duckw**d choked my peg. Despite constantly trying to clear it with the cupping kit, the w**d kept blowing back in. I spent more time out of the water than in it, limping to the scales with a miserable 4lb 12oz. It was my fifth terrible match in a row, leaving me fed up and ready to skip day two altogether.
Thankfully, I stuck with it for Day 2 at Lodden, drawing Peg 40. I targeted quality over quantity, cupping in groundbait and fishing a 4mm expander pellet on the 13m pole line. I built up a decent run of 2 to 3lb skimmers before losing a couple mid-match. A quick five-minute chuck on the method feeder produced a bonus skimmer, and back on the pole line, the elastic poured out as carp moved in. Switching to a soft 12-14 slik elastic allowed me to safely land two carp alongside a few final skimmers.
My net weighed in at 31lb 12oz, unexpectedly snatching both the section and the overall lake win in a razor-thin finish, edging second place by just 6oz. Best of all, Guy and I clinched the Chancey Pairs title with a combined 79lb 12oz, beating second place by a tiny 3oz margin. Going from pure frustration to walking away with £200 and our second pairs trophy in three years made it an unforgettable turnaround.
Well done Andy and guy great team effort and show every fish counts in these events.
