Another week, another 2.0 TDCi, High pressure fuel pump gasket. However it is nice to see Ford have used a handful of their remaining braincells to revise the problem gasket. Its only been 5 years since I first reported it via their in-dealer fault reporting system...

We caught this one just as it was starting to leak badly after another garage couldnt find it and proceeded to leave the oil filter loose and cause a whole other mess for us to clean up.

When left un-changed, Ive seen these gaskets cause the loss of up to 1 litre of oil PER DAY. A shortcut to engine ruin if you will.

Ford are good at making timebomb engines though...

Ever wondered what happens when you exceed the "reccomended power limit" of a gearbox? Well... This.

This is an M32 6-speed manual gearbox from a customers 2006 Astra VXR. These are known to develop issues beyond 250bhp. Specifically, the roller bearings at the rear of the casing begin to "flex" under load and allow the input and output shafts to "wander". Exceeding the advised limit for prolonged periods without maintenance or reinforcement of the casing will eventually cause bearing failure.

At that point the two shafts are free to move around the box and collide with other components, not to mention the failed bearing internals begin to shoot around the casing like stray bullets and eventually jam between gears or find their way out like in picture 2.

We fitted a standard reconditioned gearbox, to this one as a reinforced unit was not within the customers budget. The customer has also opted for a "de-tune" by our reccomendation until a later date when a reinforced box can be sourced.

4 years ago this week, project 2CV was dragged from its long slumber and planning began.

4 years down the line, the difference between these two photos is frankly... a bit mental.

But it does look *uckin cool now...

When budget allows we love some good MOOG Parts . But while this may look like any old 2012 mondeo witn 100k+ on the clock, its far from it... its also packing 3 point adjustable anti roll bars from H&R Springs UK, BILSTEIN B12 Shock absorbers, Eibach UK Official Instagram. lowering springs, fully adjustable rear arms & last but not least Powerflex Suspension Bushes Trailing arm bushes, anti roll bar D bushes and spring isolator caps. To say it "handles" may be an understatement. If only Id taken more photos😅

We had the pleasure last week of adding the MOOG goodies to the mix and wiring in the customers custom DRL Fog light halo rings. Another happy customer!

STOP WHAT YOURE DOING AND STEP AWAY FROM THE TOOLS...

Im all for a bit of DIY and having a go at small jobs at home but whoever tried to clean the EGR prior to me replacing it, needs to get themselves a nice call centre job and never touch a spanner or any tool again for that matter. Saying that, after what Ive seen today I think they'd be dangerous with a landline too.

This Audi A1 has been in hard limp mode for several weeks after the EGR decided its electrics had given up and that was that.

During todays job ive found:

-OSF Driveshaft missing its lock nut, half inch of it cut off and the remaining threads have been MANGLED(Vehicle last had EGR work done 8 months ago and has been to scotland & back like this).
-2 of 4 EGR gaskets missing.
-Broken stud at EGR feed pipe.
-No sealing washers on turbo oil feed.
-No gasket on turbo oil drain.
-Half the EGR mounting bolts missing. The rest were finger tight.
-Multiple boost pipes removed for access missing bolts or not re attached properly.
-Multiple coolant hardlines loose or missing bolts.
-Rubber coolant hoses routed wrong and heatshields removed next to the DPF causing two lines to tear and go pourous.

The customer couldnt remember the name of the garage/person but said "I didnt trust him from the get go". I think he shouldve trusted his gut.

THE BLACK DEATH COMETH...

Despite advising injector seals for the past 2 years of MOTs & Servicing this customer decided now was the time to have them done, and... oh boy...

As you can see the buildup of "black death" was quite impressive after 2 years worth of blow-by. It took a good few hours of chiselling, scraping, digging and expending most of the release agents I own down the back of this engine to get 4 freshly cut injector seats & seals in ready for another 100,000 miles.

Theres getting your moneys worth out of your brakes. Then theres running them to destruction. Unfortunately this customer did the latter. Going on bad advice and initially ignoring the brake wear sensor being tripped. she then brought it in when they started making a noise...

At nearly £300 per disc, I dont think shell make that mistake a second time.

Big power means Big stoppers. Performance brakes were a recurring theme at Hanger18 last week and with 400bhp and just over 2.2 Tonnes to bring to a screeching halt new Discs and pads were in order all round on the AMG and a special order placed for the M50i's brakes for this week.

We do get some bloody cool cars come through and we look after them a damn sight better than the main dealers, going by our glowing reviews from the above customers👀
