The Yorkley Institute was officially opened on Friday 20th January 1911 at a cost of £279. The money was raised through a loan of £250, donations and a concert in Yorkley School. It was built to provide much needed recreation and learning for the miners and their families. In the autumn of 2011 the management committee started the process of bidding to the Big Lottery for a grant to build a new Community Centre to serve the residents of the four villages Yorkley, Oldcroft, Viney Hill, Pillowell and beyond. In October 2013 it was announced that the bid had been successful winning funding of £500,000 and was shortly followed by the announcement of another successful bid to Gloucestershire Environmental Trust of £34,000 to install a ground source heat pump and solar panels. Our key priority areas as identified through our consultation with people in the area are:
Health activities – fitness classes, information session and cooking and healthy eating
Training and skills – including CV and job applications and business start-up sessions
Advice and information – including money management, benefit, debt and universal credit advice
Recreational and leisure activities
