Last week I was invited by Ashfield bonsai club in Derby for an outdoor carving demo.

We were gifted with some nice weather and took the opportunity to make a little mess outside.

Part of the demo i explained the progression of deadwood on especially privet and soft wood trees. You can have 'nice' deadwood, but its not very long lasting unless you soak the wood with epoxy or something else artificial.

Now this chunky privet has now done its first steps in becoming a bonsai.

The tree has been cut back hard to gain access for the carving work. As the new shoots e emerge over the next few weeks, these can be wired over autumn/winter this year to give it some direction (styling).

From there on its let the tree grow freely until the right thickness of branches is achieved.
For this tree i would say between 2 and 3 years.

Are you part of a Club or Society, and want me to provide you with a demonstration? Send me a message and we can discuss topics and dates.

Tomorrow i have a new video online!
Check it out at 10am UK time.

In this video, I revisit this Welsh Hawthorn bonsai after its major styling and repotting work last year.

The tree has responded incredibly well, producing strong growth throughout the spring, so it's time for the first maintenance work of the season.

I'll show you how to remove unwanted shoots, clean up trunk and branch growth, manage wire before it causes damage, and refine the branch structure to improve ramification and develop better bonsai pads.

This type of maintenance is essential for keeping hawthorn bonsai healthy, tidy, and progressing toward a mature, refined design.

Its time for a change of 'clothes' for my Spanish sabina juniper.
Purchased in 2018 from Kaizenbonsai and styled by me in 2019.
After years of working with the challenging foilage I made the decision I should have done from the start: graft better foilage on the tree.

It means back to square one, but sometimes we have to take a few steps back to progress to new heights.
Now its bulk time for this tree to start a new yourney of transformation 💪

With five Itiogawa juniper grafts I hope to make a more compact and reliable tree in the future.
Thanks to Peter Warren from Saruyama bonsai for the grafting expertise👏
