Tomorrow i have a new video online!
Check it out at 10am UK time.

In this video, I revisit this Welsh Hawthorn bonsai after its major styling and repotting work last year.

The tree has responded incredibly well, producing strong growth throughout the spring, so it's time for the first maintenance work of the season.

I'll show you how to remove unwanted shoots, clean up trunk and branch growth, manage wire before it causes damage, and refine the branch structure to improve ramification and develop better bonsai pads.

This type of maintenance is essential for keeping hawthorn bonsai healthy, tidy, and progressing toward a mature, refined design.

Its time for a change of 'clothes' for my Spanish sabina juniper.
Purchased in 2018 from Kaizenbonsai and styled by me in 2019.
After years of working with the challenging foilage I made the decision I should have done from the start: graft better foilage on the tree.

It means back to square one, but sometimes we have to take a few steps back to progress to new heights.
Now its bulk time for this tree to start a new yourney of transformation 💪

With five Itiogawa juniper grafts I hope to make a more compact and reliable tree in the future.
Thanks to Peter Warren from Saruyama bonsai for the grafting expertise👏

One of the first repots this year. I have been putting these of for too long now and every year I was just too busy with customers trees.

This privet came originally from a hedge in Norfolk about 10 years ago now.
I had to give it a hard prune to give it back some well needed vigor,as it was started to shed some branches.

Privets ideally need repotting every year or second year to keep vigor and growth healthy.
For refinement, repotting can stretch to 2-4years

Very unusual pot choice, a tony re*****on pot.
Maybe not the first or best choice, but i like it and the tree fits nicely in there.
There are 6 feet with each little faces sculpted into them.
I just wanted to use it in the garden instead of collecting much underneath my benches.

This tree will now be put in a greenhouse sheltered from the cold, but anywhere else sheltered (wind) should also do just fine as these privets are tough as old boots.

4 years of privet development 🌿
From raw material → structured bonsai.
Hard pruning. Ramification building. Full repot.
Now the refinement phase really begins.
Privet grows fast… if you push it right.

New video out soon!

In this video, I continue the development of a privet bonsai I first started working on back in 2022. After the second styling last year, the tree has grown strongly, and now it’s time for the next refinement stage — focusing on pruning, ramification development, wiring adjustments, and repotting into a bonsai pot.
This privet has been trained over multiple years, and this video shows the next step in turning raw material into a refined bonsai.
If you’re growing privet bonsai or working with fast-growing deciduous species, this video will help you understand how to push development while keeping structure clean and controlled.

Most people underestimate privet for bonsai.
This is 4 years of development

From raw material → structured bonsai.
Hard pruning. Ramification building. Full repot.
Now the refinement phase really begins.
Privet grows fast… if you push it right.

Wear this BonsaiMother tee when you’re tending your small tree at dawn or exchanging care tips over a cup of coffee.

The shirt nods to classic mob-movie reverence while keeping it playful — a wink to anyone who treats bonsai like family.

Lightweight and soft, it moves with you through pruning, wiring, and those quiet, patient moments of shaping a living sculpture.

It reads like an in-joke for bonsai lovers and garden nerds: serious about craft, relaxed about the rest. Slip it on for club meetings, workshops, or a weekend of repotting and you’ll feel part of a small, devoted crew that takes bonsai seriously and smiles about it.
