Last week, our HR Consultant, Emma Hartley rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in at Disability Sport Yorkshire's Volunteer Day.

She helped to paint, repair and tidy the building and grounds with 19 other big-hearted helpers from We Are Wakefield.

The group made a huge difference to the space that supports so many people across our region.

Great work, Emma!

Last month, we notified our clients of the new rules regarding annual leave records.

We’d like to remind everyone that it’s now a criminal offence to not have adequate holiday records and these records need to be kept for six years.

Breathe is a cloud-based HR management system that we often recommend to our clients as it's ideal for holiday management and record-keeping.

It can also centralise your employee data, manage absences, and save you time by streamlining HR admin tasks.

If you'd like to discuss moving to an online HR system or just need help with your holiday records, get in touch today.

Good morning!

Our Director, Tracy, will soon be taking part in the epic UK-wide dancing charity fundraiser 'Time to Tap'.

It's in support of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation - the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting those affected by lung cancer.

And here are her twinkle toes rehearsing the set routine in preparation for the big day...

Tracy and her weekly tap dance class buddies are hoping to raise £500 for this great cause - but they've a long way to go.

If you can, please donate using the link in the comments.

Any amount would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you! 💚

As much as you may try to create a fair place of work with a friendly, co-operative environment - personalities can and do clash.

This can lead to workplace disputes, and if you're a manager inside the business, it can sometimes be hard to remain neutral or know how to deal with it to get the best outcome.

If it does go formal then you must adhere to your policy (if you don’t have one, you need to get one!) and believe us when we say – formal grievances are not the easiest things to navigate.

Mint HR can assist with these kind of situations and be your impartial intermediary.

This makes it easier to deal with versus trying to sort it out yourself. We can investigate any allegations and provide workable solutions for all parties on your behalf including mediation.

For more information, please visit our website where you will find more information and guidance including and FAQs and case studies.

Some may know this as grievances but at Mint HR we’re a fan of trying to resolve matters informally if possible. Grievance sounds so prescribed and the process is. That’s why we prefer to refer to it as resolving workplace disputes.

Don't underestimate the power of a good goodbye.

In business, offboarding an employee who's resigned is just as important as onboarding them.

Firstly, ensure you tie everything off neatly in writing. A confirmation of resignation letter should detail all the requirements, information and dates related to their leaving.

If you don't officially get them 'off the books' then one could argue they never left.

We kid you not - it's been known for employers who left their jobs voluntarily, bagging a redundancy pay out many months down the line because the business couldn't prove they'd resigned!

And secondly, remember - once a person has left you have no control over what they say about your company.

A disgruntled former employee can damage your reputation in seconds with a negative online review or bad-mouthing you within your industry.

So, if there were any issues between you, make sure you resolve them and part company on good terms.

At Mint HR, we support clients for the complete employee lifecycle ending with leaver letters, accrued holiday calculations, exit interviews and more.

Are you ready for the bank holiday flurry?

Half of the eight annual bank holidays for England are occurring over the next two months.

Here are our tips to ensure you are on top of them:

🟢 A fulltime worker is entitled to the standard bank holidays for their country on top of their annual leave allowance. For England this is eight per year.

🟢 To avoid entitlement disputes, ensure contracts of employment define whether their stated annual leave amount is "inclusive of" or "plus" bank holidays.

🟢 You are entitled to ask someone to work a bank holiday and there is no legal obligation to pay them an increased rate (unless stated in their contract) but they will be entitled to a day in lieu.
🟢 If, like most, your business closes on a bank holiday you are entitled to insist all employees use their allowance on the day and does not work.

🟢If your business does operate during holidays, use a fair rota system to ensure the same employees are not always working them.

🟢If you have a new starter joining midway through your holiday year, remember to calculate their leave entitlement for that year with only the bank holidays that fall during their employment with you.

And now for the one that frequently confuses folk...

🟢 Part-time workers
Part-time workers are entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees but on a pro-rata basis according to the number of hours/days they work. Therefore, they accrue a pro-rata number of bank holidays.

E.g. If they work 4 days a week they are entitled to 4/5th of the 8 annual bank holidays which is 6.4 days (rounded up to 6.5 days).

If they don't work on the day a particular bank holiday falls, then they can use this allowance at another time.

We advise clients to book part-time workers' bank holidays that do fall on their working days at the start of the year so that the individual knows how much leave they have remaining and to avoid confusion.

And finally - just so you know, Mint HR will definitely not be working any bank holidays!

On Saturday evening, Team Mint had a wonderful evening at the Theatre Royal Wakefield's 40th Anniversary Gala.

We were proud sponsors of the pre-gala dinner before everyone was royally entertained at the theatre by local performers including several west end regulars.

The entire evening was a huge success and raised over £20,000 to support the theatre's community work.

Well done to everyone involved.
