🐀 FIRST JOB OF THE MORNING – AND A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY RATS IN YOUR GARDEN SHOULDN'T BE IGNORED!

This morning's job uncovered something that's been happening for YEARS!

Rats were often seen in the garden by the client running around, they didn't realise just how bad the issue had become.

A garden hose was running from the tap, up through a window and into an unused garage attached to the house.

🐀 The rats had been climbing up the hose and gaining access to the garage through the window for years!

It just goes to show how resourceful rats are and how something as simple as a garden hose can provide them with an easy route into a building.

⚠️ If your seeing rats in your garden, don't ignore them. They could already be finding ways into your property without you even realising.

🐀First job of the day and even the soap isn't safe when it comes to having rats in your home, Some soaps contain fats and oils which rodents will quite happily feed on.. at least they will be smelling a bit better 🤮. 🐀

Last job of the week and it might even be the last wasp treatment of the season.
The wasps were highly aggressive as soon as I went within 20ft of the nest they were out ready to attack 😬 safe to say I put on my wasp suit and treat it from a safe distance using extension poles !

Yet another reason why I always check drain inspection chambers as part of my initial inspections when it comes to locating rat entry points.
Safe to say that this is the main entry point for rats into this property at Brunswick.

🐀 I FOUND RAT DROPPINGS IN A CUTLERY DRAWER AND PILES OF FOOD WASTE AND DROPPINGS BEHIND KITCHEN UNIT KICK BOARDS—THIS HOUSE WAS A SERIOUS HYGIENE RISK.!!

Behind the kitchen kickboards: food dragged under the units, chewed plastic cartons and rat droppings.

Inside a drawer where kitchen utensils are stored: rat droppings and greasy smear marks left behind as rats move through it.

These are the hidden consequences of a rat infestation. Rats can contaminate food, utensils and preparation surfaces with urine, droppings and bacteria carried on their bodies and feet, creating a risk of illness.

🐀🐭 RATS & MICE – GET THE PROBLEM SORTED NOW, NOT LATER!

As the temperature starts to drop, rats and mice begin looking for warm, dry places to shelter, nest and find food – and unfortunately, our homes and businesses provide exactly what they need.

They can gain access through surprisingly small gaps and may end up inside lofts, cavity walls, kitchens, garages and subfloors.

⚠️ Ignoring those scratching or scurrying noises can allow a small problem to become a much bigger one and potentially coat you thousands in repair bills.

Once inside, rats and mice can:

As the weather gets colder, rats and mice start looking for warm, dry places with access to food and shelter — and unfortunately, that can mean your home.

If you’re hearing scratching, scurrying, tapping or movement in cavity walls, lofts, ceilings or beneath floors, get it checked sooner rather than later.

⚠️ Buying rat or mouse poison from a shop or ordering it online isn’t the solution.

Putting poison down might seem like the cheapest and easiest option, but it doesn’t answer the most important question:

HOW ARE THE RATS OR MICE GETTING INTO YOUR PROPERTY IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Unless the source of the problem and the entry points are identified, rodents can continue to gain access. Poison can also result in rats or mice dying in inaccessible areas such as cavity walls, beneath floors or in loft spaces, potentially causing unpleasant odours and further problems.

🐀 RATS COMING STRAIGHT FROM THE SEWER!

These photos are a great example of why simply trapping or killing rats isn't enough — the priority is finding out how they're getting into the property and stopping that access.

On this job, I discovered a sewer rodding point where the cap had not been fitted correctly. This was allowing rats to come directly out of the main sewer line, dig beneath the foundations and gain access into the property and roof space.

My approach to dealing with rats that have entered a property has three clear priorities:

🔎 1. FIND OUT HOW THEY'RE GETTING IN
This is always my first priority. I will carry out a thorough internal and external inspection of the property to establish where the rats are coming from and exactly how they're gaining access. Simply removing rats without identifying and addressing the entry point may only provide a temporary solution.

🔧 2. STOP THEM GETTING BACK IN
Once the access point has been identified, the next priority is proofing. Where possible, I can carry out the necessary proofing myself at an additional cost, which will always be discussed and agreed with the customer beforehand. If the work requires another trade, I will clearly explain what needs to be done and make the appropriate recommendations.

On this property, I cleaned the threads on the sewer rodding point and cap before securely refitting the cap, closing off the identified access route from the sewer.

🪤 3. TRAPPING AS ADDED SECURITY
Once the access route has been dealt with, professional traps are positioned in appropriate areas as an additional safeguard to quickly deal with any rats that may already be inside the property.
