I work with a lot of excellent teachers who struggle in the classroom. Students say they can't understand them, but it is NEVER about accent. The English language is a right old mix of elements and has survived because it has absorbed language traits from all the times we have been invaded. So we are a little bit Italian, a little bit Danish, a little bit German and of course a little bit French. This plays out in the sounds of our language but overall it feels more Germanic to me - those Saxons! French was only spoken in the nobility, so took longer to become integrated. If you are a teacher who is coming to work here from abroad, it is worth thinking about how different languages works. Do you naturally run words together in a constant stream of sound? This can result in faster, less easily understood speech. Checking out the percussive consonants of English for the ends of words is something to consider! I have learnt to take on board different sounds as a classical singer who has to sing in many different languages, so I help teachers with the phonetics I have learnt and add that into their understanding. It works!
