Happy Burns Night, Everyone!

Tonight, all around the world people raise a glass to the one and only Charles Montgomery Burns.

We all know he’s Springfield’s richest citizen, with a net worth of around $1.3Bn (Peanuts to some – a certain Mr Musk for example!) But why exactly is Mr Burns – or to give him his full name – Charles Montgomery Plantagenet Schicklgruber "Monty" Burns – SO popular?

Well, here’s a few reasons

His Entrepreneurial Spirit – Who else could run a nuclear power plant with minimal regard for health and safety yet keep the town’s economy afloat? A true visionary!

Efficiency Goals – Mr. Burns pioneered "Doing More With Less" (ok, the full quote is “doing more with less… humanity” – Ruthless? Yes. Effective? Also yes.

Workplace Culture – He’s created an unforgettable work environment

Innovative Employee Motivation Pioneered through existential fear

Championing Alternative Energy – Long before “green” was in, Mr. Burns taught us all about alternative energy sources… like blocking out the sun.

While his namesake Robert –‘Rabbie’ Burns celebrated the common man with poetry, our beloved Montgomery Burns has spent decades celebrating himself through ruthless capitalism!

Slàinte! Or should I say… Smithers – prepare my commemorative haggis!

Happy Hogmanay!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 As a Scot living South of the border (the clue's in my nickname), I'm always struck by how much more emphasis was put on New Years, rather than Christmas, in Scotland.

Growing up, we'd nearly always travel up to Scotland for the holidays, alternating between grandparents. While Christmas was great – and definitely for the kids – Hogmanay – that was when the grown-ups let their hair down.

Whichever grandparents we were staying with, their house would be packed with friends, relatives and neighbours, all singing Scottish songs everybody seemed to know by heart, having "a wee drink", and celebrating until the early hours. (though my mum, never a fan of New Year's, would always head off to bed early!).

After midnight struck, there was always that air of expectation – waiting for the knock on the door from your "first footer" – the first person to cross your threshold in the New Year. Traditionally a tall, dark, handsome stranger, they'd bring good luck for the year ahead. If you fitted the bill, (Shame I'm short and mousy... well... grey now...) you could have a great time going from house to house, being greeted with whisky and shortbread. The first footer would present their hosts with a piece of 'lucky coal'.

I well remember that piece of 'lucky coal' would sit through the year on the mantlepiece above the two-bar electric fire in my Gran's living room – a year-round reminder of that special night.

As an aside – my wife's (English) gran always used to put silver thru'penny bits out on her windowsill on New Year's Eve for luck – a tradition I'd never heard of. I don't think we've got any of those – but I might stick a 50p out if I can find one!

Tonight, I'll be raising a glass – a non-alcoholic one these days (since giving up alcohol a few years ago) to my homeland, friends old and new, and to bring in the New Year.

Lang may yer lum reek! 🥃
