On Sunday morning, the clocks go back, and everyone in Britain gets a free hour. In theory, it is for sleeping. In practice, the telly knows exactly what is coming.

So, this weekend's big question: are you going to spend your extra hour sleeping or on one more episode?

The toaster dial is one of Britain's great unexamined mysteries. Every household has a number, found long ago through burnt offerings, and nobody has touched the dial since. Guests who adjust it are never fully trusted again.

So settle it once and for all: is yours a number 2 house or a number 3 house?

Half-term is nearly here, which means every screen in the house is about to clock on for a 9-day shift.

The new guide on our Fibre Feed is for the grown-up refereeing it all: what to download the night before, why the Wi-Fi fades by the bedrooms, and when it is acceptable to press pause on the whole house (dinner time, always dinner time). The full guide is in the comments.

Be honest: does your house use the Wi-Fi pause button, yes or no?

The evenings are drawing in, which means the great unspoken household rule is back in force: nobody uses the big light.

Lamps on, corners glowing, the overhead light sitting there unused like the good china. Nobody knows who made this rule. Everyone obeys it.

Settle it honestly: big-light household or lamps household?

A gentle nudge for every shop, office, and hall with a wall-mounted alarm box: when did anyone last ask what it is connected to?

Plenty of alarm systems still signal over the old phone network, and that network retires in January 2027. The fix is one call to your alarm company, and the earlier the better, because next year everyone will be making the same call at once. The full guide is in the comments.

Does your building have one of those boxes? Yes or no.

A question for anyone who runs a shop, a salon, an office or a village hall: do you know what else in the building uses the phone line?

The old phone network switches off in January 2027, and the phone itself is usually the easy part. The alarm that signals out, the lift phone, the older card machine by the till: all quietly on the same wires. Our new guide walks you through checking a building in an afternoon, and most fixes take one call each. Link in the comments.

Honest answer: have you checked yours yet? Yes or no.

October is being suspiciously kind, and nobody is fooled. We all know what is coming, and when the chill finally lands, so does the great household standoff: who cracks first and turns on the heating?

The rules are ancient and unwritten. Blankets first, jumpers second, and the thermostat last. Evenings are already moving indoors, which the broadband notices even if the boiler doesn't.

Be honest: when the cold arrives, do you crack early or hold out?

Every household has a storm drawer. Torch, candles, and the matches from a restaurant that closed years ago.

Time to add the modern bits: a charged power bank and, for the committed, a little battery box that keeps the router running when the power dips. The drawer is getting crowded, and it should be.

Settle it for us: torch household or candle household?

First proper storm-season week, so here is the question every household asks in the dark: is the Wi-Fi off too?

Short version: yes, unless you have planned for it. The router runs on the same sockets as everything else, so when the house goes dark, the internet does too, even though the network in the street is usually fine. The guide covers fixes from a phone hotspot to a small battery box, plus a free backup some households are entitled to, and almost nobody claims. Link in the comments.

Important audit: do you actually know where the torch is? Yes or no.

Someone in the group chat has already mentioned Christmas. It is the 2nd of October. The router is keeping well out of it.

Too early, or fair enough?
