We’re proud to share that our Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Obss Alademerin, has recently published his research in BMJ Connections Mental Health. 📝
The study explores how Black British communities culturally recognise, cope with and respond to mental distress, identifying five interconnected themes:
• mental resilience, including emotional suppression, concealment of distress and coping in solitude
• faith in distress
• escapism through substances
• physical and creative release
• peer support
One of the important reflections from the research is that distress is not always understood, expressed or responded to in the same way.
Culture, identity, community and lived experience can all influence how someone makes sense of what they are feeling, whether they speak about it and where they turn for support.
There are important implications here for psychological practice in elite sport and high-performance environments too.
Athletes enter high-performance environments with a history, culture, community, identity and their own ways of understanding and responding to threat and distress. Understanding the cultural nuances behind the ways athletes might respond to distress is central to our ability to offer meaningful psychological support to individuals and systems.
Congratulations to Obss on an important contribution to this area of research.
