🌿 Parabens & Phathalates! 🌿

We've had a few people reach out recently asking whether our fragrance oils are paraben-free and phthalate-free - particularly as they'd like to use these claims when marketing their finished products 💗

So, we thought we'd explain a little here too for those of you know would like to know the answer to this too 🙂

Firstly, ALL of our fragrance oils are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free and paraben-free 💫 When it comes to phthalates, there's a little more to it...

🧪 What is DEP?
Some of our fragrance oils contain Diethyl Phthalate, an ingredient widely used within the fragrance industry. DEP is 'technically' a phthalate, but it's important to understand that not all phthalates are the same!

'Phthalates' are a family of chemicals with different uses, properties and safety profiles. While some have raised health concerns, DEP has a different safety profile and is not classified as hazardous under European CLP regulations, and is perfectly safe for use in home fragrance products.

🌸 Why is DEP used in fragrance oils?
DEP is primarily used as a solvent and carrier. Fragrance oils contain lots of different aromatic ingredients, and DEP helps them work together by:

✨ Helping dissolve and blend fragrance ingredients
✨ Keeping formulations consistent and stable
✨ Helping prevent certain ingredients from separating or crystallising
✨ Supporting fragrance performance within a formulation

Essentially, it serves a practical purpose in creating a stable, well-blended fragrance oil.

💕 Is DEP safe?
DEP has been used in the fragrance industry for many years and is not classified as hazardous under European CLP regulations.
It's important not to confuse DEP with other phthalates that have different safety concerns.

📱 What does this mean for my marketing?
If your fragrance oil contains DEP, you can't accurately claim your finished product is 'phthalate-free', because DEP is 'technically' a phthalate. However, that doesn't automatically mean the fragrance oil is unsafe or unsuitable for your products, and you can rest assured that all of our oils are perfectly safe for use in home fragrance and cosmetic products.

If you want to know if an oil contains DEP, you can find this stated on the SDS. If you're unsure, need help or have any questions, you're more than welcome to email [email protected] and we'd be happy to advise further 🥰

We try to keep up with what’s happening across the wider home fragrance and cosmetics industry, and yesterday morning, we saw a segment on BBC Breakfast which was concerning.

BBC Panorama investigated and recently commissioned laboratory testing of four body mists bought from UK two high-street stores. According to that report, 'Marshmallow Kisses' and 'Blueberry Muffin' body mists bought from Home Bargains were found to contain DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate) - a substance banned in UK cosmetics.

Two of these mists were part of a pack of three - marketed towards children. That was the bit that really stopped us in our tracks. As a parent, you’d reasonably expect a product being sold aimed at children would have been properly checked before it reached the shelves.

✨ What is DBP, and why is it a concern?

The report describes DBP as toxic to reproduction and a hormone-disrupting chemical. Experts raised concerns about exposure during important stages of development - including puberty.

Professor Paul Fowler also discussed a possible association between applying DBP to the skin and increased health risks later in life - including cancers. We do want to be careful with the wording here, because some posts circulating make that sound more definite than the report does.

This is not proof that using these particular body mists causes cancer, but the investigation discussed the potential risks, and acknowledged that researchers are still trying to understand the reasons behind rising cancer rates in younger people. This distinction matters, but so does the reported finding of a banned substance in products marketed towards children.

Many of you work with fragrance ingredients, buy supplies and make products that other people use in their homes and on their skin. Developments like this are relevant to us all.

You need to think about CLPs, regulatory documentation, IFRA, allergens, assessments and everything else; and we know it can feel like an endless amount of paperwork and stress when you’re just trying to run a small business - but there’s a reason those checks exist.

They help us understand exactly what we’re working with, whether it’s suitable for its intended use and what information our customers need. It also shows why the information behind a product needs to be accurate.

Customers place a lot of trust in the businesses they buy from. They shouldn’t need specialist knowledge to work out whether a body mist they’ve bought for their child contains something that legally shouldn’t be there.

Panorama approached Home Bargains for a statement, but nobody was available to comment. Unfortunately, we haven’t found an official recall notice or confirmed affected batch details, so we can’t tell you whether every bottle of these scents is affected.

We’ve made it through the week, and all Christmas pre-orders have officially left the building 🎄📦

Some parcels have arrived, some are making their way through the network, and some are waiting for Royal Mail's tracking to catch up 🙈 but we’re so excited for them to get to you, and we can’t wait to hear what you think of them 🥰

Every time we do a big launch like this, we’re blown away by the excitement, support, orders, and just how many of you are keen to smell what we’ve chosen to add to the HoS shelves 🫶 We put so much thought into our collections, and we hope you and your customers love them!

We really enjoy seeing the products you create, watching our oils become part of your own brands, and spotting posts in your own communities from your own customers who love something you've made with our scents, and I can’t tell you how much of a buzz that gives us 💗 There’s just something absolutely lush about knowing a bottle that we’ve poured and packed ends up becoming part of something so much more 🥹
