Making movements ♻️
On Wednesday morning, Lily and Charlie visited the Fortress recycling plant in Warwick to get an insight into where our waste goes. The Farm is one of 4,500 businesses using Fortress’s services every week to dispose of our waste ♻️
At The Farm we’ve recently introduced a co-mingled recycling scheme in collaboration with Fortress - this means all waste (excluding food and glass) is sorted via the same machinery. Compared to the way we separate our plastics and cardboard at home, this might seem counterintuitive! But to save on emissions caused by separate bin collections, Fortress collects all dry mixed recycling together which is then sorted at their processing facility in Warwick.
Seeing how the waste is processed using state-of-the-art machinery was a real eye-opener, and the visit really brought home that our waste doesn’t disappear just because we can’t see it 🥛
Becoming entirely zero waste in the hospitality industry is a big challenge. But by ensuring that we adhere to Fortress’s recycling guidelines, we can strive to become zero waste to landfill, meaning that >99% of our waste will be composted, recycled, reused, or directed into energy recovery 💡
So how can you help us on our zero waste to landfill mission?
Separate your food from general waste! You can do this by putting organic waste in our designated food bins – one outside the Apple Store and the other in the café 🍎
This small step will help us to support Fortress in their mission to keep as much waste as possible landfill-free.
To quote Rob from Fortress, ‘Put the right thing in the right bin. It’s as simple as that.’
