A phrase stopped me in my tracks this week:
“An analogue government in a digital world.”
It was said in a political context, but it captured something much bigger. A challenge I see across business too.

So many organisations are trying to transform digitally while still thinking, leading, deciding and communicating through analogue mindsets.

The real gap is not just technology.
It is translation.

How do we help people bring their experience, intuition, creativity and human judgement into a digital world without losing what makes them valuable?

That is the space I am interested in closing. the gap

I realised something uncomfortable about myself recently.

Somewhere along the way…
I had become a human doing instead of a human being.

For years my life was driven by responsibility.
Work harder.
Fix problems.
Provide.
Produce.

If something needed solving, I stepped in.
If something broke, I fixed it.
If pressure increased, I pushed harder.
From the outside, that probably looked like dedication.

But internally…
it slowly became exhausting.

When I revisited my DISC profile recently, something clicked.

My personality wiring pushes me toward ex*****on and responsibility.
Those are strengths but under stress, those same strengths can turn into overdrive.
More doing.
Less reflection.
Less presence.

The realisation was simple but uncomfortable.
Productivity had slowly become my identity and when that happens, you start measuring your value by what you produce instead of who you are.

Many of us fall into this trap.
We fill our lives with activity…
but lose sight of alignment and without alignment, success often feels strangely empty.

This is exactly the kind of blind spot the Know Thyself journey helps uncover.

Because when you understand your wiring…
You stop fighting yourself.
And that’s when real growth begins.

You know what nobody talks about with success?

Cognitive quiet.

That moment when you finally understand who you are…
and what you’re genuinely good at.

Because when that happens, something powerful changes.

Your mind stops replaying the same internal negotiations.

🤨“Should I be here?”
😠“Am I good enough?”
🤷‍♀️“What do they expect?”

▪️The noise disappears.
▪️And quiet minds?
▪️They think strategically.

If that resonates, I explore this in my LinkedIn newsletter. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/quiet-power-knowing-yourself-christine-reid-williams-dh5re

Looking back at my generation men were taught one thing growing up:

Your job is to provide.
Provide security.
Provide stability.
Provide financially.

But no one teaches us something just as important.

How to be present.
For most of my life, I believed my role was simple.
Work hard. Provide for my family. Carry responsibility.
And in many ways, that instinct served me well.

But it also created a blind spot.

Because the more pressure I felt…
The more I defaulted to doing.

When I took the DISC assessment years ago, something stood out.

Under stress, my personality type becomes hyper-responsible.

That means:
More work.
More fixing.
More problem-solving.
But very little slowing down.
And very little emotional presence.

The danger with this wiring is subtle.
You start believing that what you do for people equals how much you love them.
But those two things are not always the same.
Many men quietly carry this burden.
We think love looks like:

• working harder
• sacrificing more
• solving every problem

But sometimes the people closest to us don't need another solution.

They need our presence.
That’s one of the lessons self-awareness has been teaching me lately.
And it’s exactly why Christine and I built the Know Thyself journey.
Because the more we understand our wiring…
The less likely we are to let our strengths become blind spots.

I have a challenge for you tonight.
When you get home, ask your partner one question:

“If I died tomorrow… would you remember me as someone who loved you well?”

Not someone who worked hard.
Not someone who provided.
But someone who made you feel loved.

Confession
My wife and I had this conversation recently. Her answer stopped me in my tracks.
She said she would remember everything I had done for her…

…but she wasn’t sure she would say she felt deeply loved.
That one sentence exposed something uncomfortable about me.

Years ago I completed a DISC personality assessment.
One of the things it revealed was that when I’m under pressure, I default to responsibility and output.
I solve problems by doing more.
Working harder.
Providing more.
Fixing more.
But personality wiring has a shadow side.

If you’re not careful…
provision can quietly replace presence.

That conversation made me realise something.
I had spent years trying to love my family by doing things for them.
But love isn't always felt through action.
Sometimes it's felt through attention.

So here’s the uncomfortable question.
If you died tomorrow…
Would the people closest to you say:
“They loved me well.”

Or

“They did a lot for me.”
Those two things are not always the same.
This is one of the blind spots self-awareness exposes.
It’s also why Christine and I started the Know Thyself journey.
Because sometimes the biggest gaps in our lives are the ones we can’t see ourselves.
