Conflict is a common part of the workplace, but it doesn't have to be destructive. By understanding the root causes of conflict and identifying where you're stuck, you can learn to resolve conflict in a healthy and productive way.
Here are three tips:
Recognise what the conflict is really about. Don't assume that you and the other person agree on the nature of the conflict. Take some time to dig into the possible root causes and identify any areas of disagreement.
Identify where you're stuck. Are you justifying your actions or point of view? Are you holding your ground without budging? Listing out your possible justifications can help you identify where your ego is getting in the way of finding common ground.
Stay curious in the face of difference. Instead of immediately shutting down an idea because you disagree with it, ask questions. Be open to new information and perspectives.
