💛 is still very much alive, in the , in ’s and in the joyful, collective spirit of .

We will never know the impact of what we started five years ago, as lockdown threatened to crush us . By the time we’d finished our first broadcast and shared the hashtag 💛 we were a community of 20+ co-founders and growing.

Like bluebells, 💛 is everywhere now, in the very DNA of our values-led work together. Hardly a day passes without its joyful presence echoing back to me. In the words of lovely , the philosophy where all of this began, 💛 is IMMANENT (embodied, in us).

But we’ve always known when to step away, as we did from the original , from the broadcasts and from the . We’ve always known when needs to be directed elsewhere.

That’s why, on the near-eve of our 5th birthday, we are closing down our socials. 💛 doesn’t need them, because it’s in us. And the hashtag will be there (and on the AmplifyFE map) forever.

And, like those bluebells, when it’s time to pop up again, we’ll be there 🪻

Time to wake up that Green Changemakers 🦄💚

It’s been more about getting out of the house today than getting on with work - it all felt too quiet at home after a busy, sociable Christmas and my wake-up mood was low.

Nowhere else better to lift my spirits than productive home-from-home Highfield Coffee Social, working on .mag.uk and planning a blistering, joyful call-to-action for my trip to Walsall College on Monday 💚

is a changemaking energy which comes from digging deep for joy in dark times.

It’s how we protect and nurture hope.

It’s how we keep change momentum going.

It’s an affirmative ‘virus’.

We overcome despair through the we generate in

So when I woke in despair this morning to find this poem by Dawood Sadiq in my WhatsApp I was able to get out of the house, come to and pick up my work.

⭐️POTENTIA⭐️

We have the power!
The power to rebel,
To refuse to lie down
And watch the world go to hell.
We have the power
To educate and inform
To build a better world
For those not yet born.
We have the power
If only we chose to use it
To nudge ourselves to better ways,
To love the world and not abuse it.
We have the power
Because of what we do
To really make a difference
And bury dragons that we slew.
We have the power
Of wisdom learned of old
To reconnect our network
And break out of the mould.
We have the power
To dance to life’s sweet tune
To face our future knowing
Our time has come to bloom.

I’m not a bragger, I’m really not (not a humble bragger either ugh 🤢). My self-esteem and self-worth are pretty strong.

But I’ve been feeling vulnerable recently. Tech problems, not much work out there (not much money out there!), other life stuff…the has been pretty quiet 🦜

And then someone whom I really admire reached out like The Four Tops to offer this appreciation for my PhD research. She didn’t have to. I would never have known if she hadn’t. But she did.

This was Saturday morning and I have hugged it to me all weekend. It’s not just appreciation, it’s appreciation for being BRAVE. And it arrived at a time when I felt small.

Doesn’t it just go to show that is found in unexpected places? That a few minutes invested in offering appreciation can turn someone’s day around? is always worth doing.

Thank you, colleague. I appreciate your generosity of spirit. I’ve remembered who I am 🦁👑 I am sharing this post here for the next time I forget.

So I’m thinking about on

I’ve been a carer for a long long time (not including solo parenting). As an person, I’ve had the blessing of three parents! And I still have the joy of Little El in my life.

The thing about caring is that the impact on the carer’s life is multi-faceted.

👊🏻 FINANCIAL - not only inability to work for pay but also fear of losing your job due to intransigence about caring commitments. Hugely unsettling.

👊🏻 EMOTIONAL - not always, but often, you know there’s only one way this story is going to end. The awareness that you’re losing your person, day by inexorable day, is crushing.

👊🏻 PHYSICAL - the daily graft of fitting it all in. Rushing around wildly to get everything done, then stepping into the space with your person and having to slow it all down to ease and patience…chemicals, speech, responses, physical demeanour. Like the movie cliché of stepping into the lift after the car chase and before the gunfight.

👊🏻 SOCIAL - knowing you just can’t forward plan social events like you used to…or committing to being and then feeling sick with guilt all the time away. The emotional labour of that.

All of this. All of THIS ⬆️⬆️⬆️

offers memes, blogs and tips - some of which are super-useful. But what we need more is far-reaching which elevates the role of (unpaid and paid) caring and gives us all a chance for some

Can I be brave enough to embrace true in my life?

Rest for health, rest for hope?

I teach it, I use the principles to get by, I live joyfully and accountably…and yet, I find myself still falling into the trap of waiting until a holiday to rejuvenate. Which, this year, has involved lots of money and getting on a plane.

Inspired by the teachings of the , I know that is both an honouring of those who were (and are) not allowed to rest, and to the capitalist grind.

My spirit is rested now, thanks to sunshine, good food, swimming and much laughter. I can’t do anything about the sunshine, but I can make sure there is more time for three of those in my daily life.

And the only way I can do that is to live more simply. Spend less money and less time on things that don’t matter. Work less, and only do work that feeds my

It’s scary, because I’m not financially secure and I never will be. The terror of that is what drives my non-restful practices. It’s a doom loop I’ve never been able to break - until now. I think things could be different if I allow myself to dream, not of paying for rest (holidays) but of rest every single day.

Good food, moving my body, laughter and connection.

Financial health not by working more, but by spending less.

Totally the star, today and always ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Congratulations on your Masters in Research from (and despite) 💚

You worked full-time, studied full-time, got sick and still pulled off an incredible piece of work, which you presented at earlier this year.

You did beautiful justice to our working-class communities of the , writing and researching with love and joy 💛

It’s been a privilege to have you working on alongside me this last year. Time now for you to put everything into practice and make the difference in the world you were always destined to do.

I’m so proud of you ❤️

I love this candid photo of , taken on a day out yesterday to Filey and Bempton Cliffs. We all know how to strike a pose these days, but sometimes you can just capture the spirit of a person. Strong, joyful, spirited and loving. So proud of this man ❤️

We held our first listening session (not got a name for it yet) at yesterday.

It was beautiful. A gently facilitated space which enabled each of us to process thoughts and feelings about recent events 😊

We’d love to hold more, at different times. The thinking in itself was healing and we also felt that:

⭐️ it would be useful to get hold of some clear information around immigration/asylum processes, funding etc. We realised that there was a lot that we didn’t know and that facts don’t always change opinions but that we wished we were more informed. It’s hard to get through all the misinformation.

⭐️ it would be good to develop some skills around challenging, for example, racist language.

⭐️ the importance of food in bringing people together to find common ground.

⭐️ we all need to do our own work, to live our own anti-racist lives (out of work as well as in work). That’s going to be different for each of us and I’m thinking deeply about what more I can do, that will be meaningful.

Community responses are emerging and it’s important to join everything up but this felt like a really helpful space.

We’d love to know what you think, too.

And it was great to see back behind the bar! 😊

“Whatever the problem, community is the answer.”
Meg Wheatley

This morning’s community clean-up at Wath/Manvers was 💛💛💛JOYFUL💛💛💛 (except for the chap who drove by on a motorbike with his Aldi bag shouting “Traitors” 😂

Many, many thanks to those who organised it and to the journalists who came back this morning looking for the light, after the storm 🙏🏼

Lovely to see so many good people down there⭐️⭐️⭐️

Appreciated meeting , enjoyed our conversation and connection, thanks for the photo!

Police were cheery and helpful.

The atmosphere was pure community, purposeful and helpful. It was clear people had been up super early and much had been done, but you could see the devastation 😡

Many of us retired to for a free brew and we sat outside, sharing stories and talking to any one. And here’s the thing…

…we didn’t agree. Well, to be fair, we all agreed that attacking the hotel was totally out of order. But beyond that, we disagreed on lots, significantly lots.

But we sat.
And we talked.
And we listened.
And we lived and let live.

THIS 👊🏻 is what our community needs now.

Community healing and holding the space to disagree, listen, find ways of working through the complexities of this world that we find ourselves in.

Call it a Community Assembly? 💙

I’m in.

Finally got to see the amazing as part of a day to remember in London, celebrating my sister 👑 Loved planning this with ❤️ and the icing on the cake was late night drinks with the boys and 🍰

Starting the day making a gorgeous healthy spread for the graduation of adorable littlies at my sister’s nursery 🍒🍇🍓🍉

Brunch and with and Miss Pip 🐕

for exceptional cocktails and a chilled vibe on a hot day 🔥

for the stories of the Queens (only walk-on parts for the men who controlled them) 👑👑👑👑👑👑

A brilliant couple of hours at - great food, great vibes and an unforgettable disco toilet 💃

Then Six itself (without a corpulent psychopath in sight). We’ve wanted to see it for so long and it did not disappoint!

…and walking home through London with a huge moon 🌙

Memories to pour over and a falling-in-love-again with this magnificent city ❤️

time in beautiful South Wales with my companions and the 💙

Tomorrow we are introducing some fabulous researchers to the community ⭐️ and hopefully find some new writers for .mag.uk 😌

We’ll be talking about how important FE Research is to the and as a lever for long term sustainable change. The 🦄 of is in the minor gestures, as Erin Manning writes, each trickle that flows into a stream that flows into the sea🌊

But only if we find each other ⭐️
