This painting is named February Fill D**e, inspired by the old saying first recorded in 1557 "Feuerell fill d**e, doth good with his snowe."
It depicts Ash trees on Sedgemoor in 1881 and is remarkably accurate in its portrayal of Somerset’s trees and hedges. Notice the ivy creeping up the stem, laid hedges and pollard willows. The ash appear to have pulled up through close growing, perhaps this was originally a small wood and these are the remaining few trees.
