Why I'm Not a Business Coach

In reality, I'm more of a Leadership and Management Partner for business owners who want a stronger business with less pressure and more control.
When people ask me what I do, the easiest answer is usually "business coach."

It's a convenient label. Most people have some idea what it means.

The problem is that it isn't really accurate.

When many people hear the word coach, they imagine someone asking questions, helping you find your own answers and supporting you along the way. There is certainly value in that approach, and there are some excellent coaches out there.

But that isn't really what my clients pay me for.

My clients don't come to me because they need motivation.

They don't come to me because they need encouragement.

And they certainly don't come to me because they need someone to ask them how they feel about a problem they already know exists.

Most of the business owners I work with are intelligent, capable people. They know their industry far better than I ever will. They understand their products, services and customers. What they often lack is not knowledge of their trade, but clarity about how to build a stronger business around it.

That is where I come in.

I help business owners see things they cannot see themselves.

I challenge assumptions.

I identify bottlenecks.

I point out weaknesses in the way the business is designed.

I ask difficult questions and, perhaps more importantly, I don't accept easy answers.

Sometimes that means challenging the owner's thinking.

Sometimes it means challenging the way the business operates.

And occasionally it means pointing out that the biggest obstacle to growth isn't the market, the team or the competition.

It's the owner.

That isn't always comfortable.

But it is often necessary.

My role is closer to a combination of advisor, mentor, strategist, accountability partner and experienced business leader than it is to what many people think of as traditional coaching.

I bring twenty-five years of leadership experience, more than a decade working with business owners and exposure to hundreds of businesses across multiple industries. That means I can often spot patterns very quickly.

The business owner sees a staffing problem.

I see a leadership problem.

The business owner sees a sales problem.

I see a positioning problem.

The business owner sees a cashflow problem.

I see a business design problem.

The difference is important because symptoms are rarely the real issue.

My job is to help owners identify the cause, not just react to the consequence.

What clients get from working with me is not a collection of motivational quotes or theoretical models.

They get clarity.

They get challenge.

They get structure.

They get accountability.

Most importantly, they get a different perspective from someone who is not emotionally attached to the business.

Someone who can tell them the truth when others won't.

The ultimate goal isn't to create a better business owner.

It's to create a better business.

One that is more profitable.

Less stressful.

Less dependent on the owner.

And far easier to run.

Because most business owners don't need another cheerleader.

They need someone who can help them think differently, challenge what isn't working and make it easier to build a better business.
