Lenkiewicz Legacy

Consigned at our fine art valuation day, this beautiful watercolour portrait of Esther Dallaway is by renowned but highly eccentric and controversial British artist Robert Lenkiewicz.

In his extraordinary efforts to make every day an ‘experiment in living’, Lenkiewicz focussed his work on those at the margins of society, including the homeless and the mentally ill, and became notorious for faking his own death and embalming the dead body of his vagrant assistant Edwin Mackenzie, whom he called Diogenes.

Happy to be largely ignored by the conventional art world in his lifetime, but always popular with the public, Lenkiewicz finally found commercial success after his death, when his huge body of work (and huge debts) came to light.

The portrait, titled ‘Esther On The Settle’, depicts his model and muse Esther Dallaway. She was one of the many women in his life, and frequently the subject of his work.

The portrait will be offered for sale at our September Fine Art and Antiques auction with an estimate of £2000 to £4000. The auction will take place on 9th and 10th September, and the fully illustrated catalogue will be available next week.

A Messenger From The Gods

Consigned for our September auction, this large 19th century bronze statue of the Roman god Mercury is after the original work by Italian sculptor Giambologna (1529-1608). It depicts the god with winged helmet and heals, balancing on a gust of wind blown by the wind god Boreas.

Mercury was the god of many things, including commerce, communication, eloquence, financial gain, luck, thieves and trickery, but is perhaps best known as the fleet footed messenger of the gods. His Greek equivalent is Hermes.

At nearly 2 meters tall, this is an impressive piece which is already attracting attention from potential bidders. It will go under the hammer at our September auction with an estimate of £2000 to £4000. The auction will take place on 9th and 10th September, and the fully illustrated catalogue will be available next week.
