Old Knobbley Oak in Mistley, Essex 💙🦋🌿 One of the oldest Oaks in Britain with a 9.5 metre trunk and an estimated age of 800 years. It has been struck by lightning, bombed, ravaged by fires, survived droughts, floods, famine, freeze and thaw, where every injury inflicted has healed in the most beautiful burrs I have ever seen. It provided sanctuary for hundreds of women who fled to Furze Woods and hid in the boughs and branches of this magnificent tree, from the vile witch hunter, Matthew Hopkins. Today, if offers a different kind of refuge, for Fungi, Birds and Insects. A truly special and precious tree that I found difficult leaving.

This tunnel of beech trees in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was planted back in the 18th century to impress those approaching the Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. Today, the Dark Hedges are well-known for being featured in HBO’s Game of Thrones, where they stand in as the Kingsroad, a road with Castle Black in the North at one end and King’s Landing in the South at the other.
