Occasionally biology makes you look silly, I felled the bulk of this birch for a neighbour and leave the trunk.
It was cut just above a lower lateral where the swing was going to stay until the stability depleted in the branch and to support the climbing rose.
I was convinced it would die especially being birch l, but here it is…. obviously decay will be advancing from the cut but it’s got some spirit.

Ready to burn, Woodsure accredited once again! Softwood 16.5%, Hardwood 17.5%.
Our representative samples were sent off to be baked in an oven for a set time at a certain temperature and they work out the moisture held pre and post baking. 🎂
We know our wood is dry, we test regularly with moisture meters, the wood has been split and stored for around 2 years before it heads back out the door.
Is it a worth while scheme? The jury is still out….

I’m a ‘top down’ fan. 👍
This time an uninterrupted burn time of 3hrs 23mins. 🔥 ⏰
Starting with the larger bits on the bottom, tightly pack and just keep going up- the main point is igniting it on the top. ⬆️
Today we chose to light with a birthday card envelope and some tumble dryer fluff (smells like arse but takes well) softwood bits for the kindling and hardwood for the rest, all castoffs from our firewood production so by no means rigged for maximum effect- but seasoned for 2yrs well under 20% moisture. 🪵
As a flame doesn’t radiate or conduct much heat straight down it uses the fuel at its own pace kind of like a candle. 🕯️
This allowed us to light the fire; make and have dinner, bath the kids, get them ready and into bed for as long as was needed and still have hot embers to stick the next lot on. ☮️

A new direction.
Some of you may know I’ve recently started a hopefully long career as a retained fire fighter (in development) at my local station, this has always been a desire of mine- a few serious incidents one involving a friend of mine and a separate rtc involving the rest of my young family prompted me to pull my finger out, get stuck in and make it happen.
I am able to respond from home or my own work which is now mainly producing firewood and the occasional very local job the the help of some trusted colleagues, I’m also still employed part time with the largest independently owned tree surgery firm on the south coast who have been gracious enough to allow a change in my role there from a team leader to h&s assistant.
Big up my wife who’s managing me running out halfway through dinner.
