A data protection officer (DPO) is an independent expert that helps a business manage GDPR compliance. It is a statutory role, and the three key tasks of a DPO are:

- to monitor the business’ compliance with data protection laws,
- to advise the business on its obligations, and
- to be a contact point for data subjects and the authorities.

Not all businesses are required to formally appoint a statutory DPO, but every business needs a person or team fulfilling this role in order to stay compliant and avoid fines.
