Spring barley 🌾 is in the ground and emerging well under reasonable conditions for most.

This time of year we see ground nesting birds such as lapwings and oystercatchers using these crops as ideal nesting locations, as they provide relatively open spaces allowing the birds to detect predators from a distance.

These nests are extremely difficult to locate on foot as they are well camouflaged, they are thankfully much easier to spot from the tractor cab, so farmers can move around them and travel through the field without disturbing the nesting mothers.

All topped off with beautiful sunshine in Inverness ☀️ The perfect backdrop for learning, collaboration, and shared insight.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us and helped make this course such a success.

It’s the Big Farmland Bird Count from 6th February through to the 22nd February. We’ve been out on farm to see what’s around!

The Redwings and Fieldfare are still here feasting on the stubbles in their flocks. Exaltations of Skylarks – the invisible bird – taking flight from the cover crops and watching from above. Yellow Hammer and Blue T**s in the hedgerows, hosts of Sparrows squabbling in the bushes around the farm steadings. Coveys of Grey Partridge seen taking flight low over hedges and field margins between fields.

Reed Bunting, like this one (below right) spotted in East Lothian are one of the species on the farmland bird indicator list.

The reed bunting moved from the red to amber list in 2009 with evidence of some recovery in numbers.

We would love to know what birds you are seeing on farm.
