Over the weekend our team carried out cable spiking operations in challenging and muddy conditions 🌧️.
The video shows the stage most people associate with this activity — e.g. initiating the spike. While this is the visible part of the process, it represents only the final step of a carefully controlled procedure.
Safe cable spiking relies on several preceding stages, including:
• Positive identification and verification of the cable to be spiked;
• Selection of the appropriate spiking location and safe system of work;
• Installation and operation of specialist spiking equipment by competent personnel;
• Management of confined trench environments and difficult ground conditions.
Following the spike itself, further work is required to cut, separate and clearly label the cables to ensure unambiguous identification for subsequent works.
Activities such as these highlight the importance of methodical preparation, competent personnel and strict adherence to procedure, particularly where there is no tolerance for error.
The conditions on site — including confined trenches and waterlogged ground — also serve as a reminder that many of these operations take place in environments that require both technical expertise and practical experience to manage safely.
Well done to the team involved for delivering the works professionally and safely.
