Just because you may prefer chocolate and banana pancakes and someone else prefers lemon and sugar or savoury ones, it doesn’t mean their choice is wrong, it’s what tastes right for them.

It’s like personality types - just because someone works or communicates in a different way to you, it doesn’t mean it is wrong, it’s just what comes more naturally to them.

Appreciating this can make all the difference when team's work closely together, reducing frustrations and allowing people to work better together.

So whatever flavour pancake you enjoy today, just be aware that others may prefer a different topping, and that’s ok!

(By the way, mine is chocolate sauce - lots of it!)

Frustrations on a Friday ....... typoes - and yes, that's a deliberate one !
I could also have added an apostrophe into the mix to really wind some people up!

For those who are detail-oriented when it comes to information, a typo can be distracting and if there are enough of then, pretty frustrating!

But for those who are more about the big picture, they are generally less likely to notice or be distracted by them.

If you know that you can miss typos etc., then why not ask someone that you know is likely to spot them to have a look at your work / report before sending it?

I'm all about detail, and also the daughter of an English Teacher - I've been known to point out typos on shop notice boards or had the urge to get a pen out and correct them myself!

Frustrations on a Friday .............

Structured folders for filing your emails or just everything in your Inbox and use the search function?

One side of this diagram will probably resonate more with you than the other – in fact, in some people it might provoke quite a strong reaction when looking at the side that doesn't!

The way in which you prefer to deal with your emails is likely to be influenced by your personality type and the information you prefer and feel comfortable with?

There is no right or wrong way, it's what works for you (so where's the frustration you may ask? ) .......... until you need to collaborate with someone who is the opposite to you! (Ah, there it is!)

It's then worth looking at what can work for you both, which might mean both of you flexing your approach a bit.

Frustrations on a Friday ...............
Imagine yourself as a teenager in the back of this car. How would you be feeling at this point?
As someone who prefers to live a planned life, I would probably have been pretty frustrated at this point, and would probably have said so!
But appreciating these differences in how people prefer to live their lives can be a real game changer at home (as well as at work) to help reduce conflict and annoyance.

When your team is going through a change, remember that one size does NOT fit all.
If you communicate how you'd like to be communicated to, you could lose engagement with many of your team.

Differences in how people take in information or the sort of information they need can be very different.
Some of your team will want to know:
- detailed information about the change
- just the end point, they'll then ask what they need to know
- what's the impact on the team
- the pros and cons / logistics of the change

With this in mind, provide information in a number of ways, let people ask questions via email, face-to-face and after a team meeting (they may need time to digest what they've just heard).

Knowing the personality types of those in your team can really help with engagement and make change a smoother process.

Frustrations on a Friday ........... I messed up!

I forgot about the haircut I booked for one of the kids over the holidays!!
Luckily our fab hairdresser rang and we managed to get round there quickly so all was not lost.

But as someone whose motivator is to be reliable, responsible and not let people down, it didn't matter what it was I had forgotten, I was still frustrated at myself for doing it. (If you're like me ..... you'll know what I am talking about!)

Some of you may be thinking, why get upset about that?! but this example highlights how differences in personality type, and what motivates us, can influence how we respond in certain situations.

We are all human, we all mess up from time to time, but appreciating that some people will be more frustrated than others, helps teams work better together.

If you'd like to know how I help people in teams discover what makes them 'tick' and appreciate that others may 'tock', with fun interactive workshops and Lunch & Learns, do get in touch

Festive Frustrations on a Friday!

Over the holidays, people might attempt a game of some sort or other.

Anyone been in the board game situation below?
Or perhaps it's a Board Room situation (see what I did there!)

Some people find talking helps them think, so they can misunderstand when someone is quiet after being asked a question. They may think the person has not understood, so rephrase the question.

In actual fact, it may just be that the person is someone who thinks things through internally before giving their final answer and hearing it rephrased disrupts their thinking process.

So here are my top tips :

Silence isn't always a bad thing, just wait a few more seconds and you may get a superb well-formed answer to your question.

When someone is talking their thoughts out, you are hearing their thought processes, so it's worth checking if they have reached their final answer before actioning things.

Wishing everyone fun over the festive period!

And remember, there is no better or worse personality type to be, but appreciating these differences can be a GAME changer!!

Frustrations on a Friday continues ..............
Why on earth are they doing it like that?
That just doesn't feel right to me!

We can have a tendency to think that our way is the right way - and it's nothing new, as this Jane Austen quote shows!

The issue comes when people who work together don't appreciate this.
That's where I come in!
I help people discover what makes them 'tick' and appreciate that others may 'tock'.

So perhaps, instead of insisting someone does something your way, as long as the desired outcome is achieved and there isn't a negative impact, then why not be open to people doing things in other ways.

Do get in touch to see how I can help your team work even better together.

Frustrations on a Friday..... (after work!)
Was it something we said?

Don't be offended if someone isn't up for going out after a busy day at work - it might just be they are different to you!
Differences in how people prefer to recharge can cause issues if people aren't aware of this.

When a team understands and can appreciate these differences, it can help them work even better together and manage expectations about what happens at the end of a work day.

So why not discover what makes you 'tick' and appreciate that others may 'tock' ?

It was the Summer of 1987, and I was running late for work.

I'd dried my, what was back then, long hair and left the hairdryer on the floor.

You can probably guess where this is going ..... yep, in my haste I tripped on the lead and caught my hand on the door frame - one broken bone and a very late start at work as a result!

Why am I telling this story? Because I was forced to experience operating outside of my natural default for a significant period of time as I'd broken my writing hand. It also provided me with an example I could use in my business 40 years later!

Having to only use my non-preferred hand presented many challenges, writing being just one of them! And my job at the time included lots of writing!

I remember going home after the first few days exhausted! I was having to concentrate so hard even to produce slow, spiderlike letters, but as the weeks went by, I got better at it and it became less draining. (If fact my writing with my left hand was better than some with their preferred hand!)

Our personality type, like our handedness is something we are born with. It's a natural default preference, but it doesn't mean we cannot operate in the opposite way and with time get more comfortable with it.

What happened when everything was mended? Well I went straight back to writing with my right hand again as it felt natural for me, but to this day I am still pretty good writing with my left hand.

So what's the message here? We can all behave in ways that are not our natural preference, it can be tiring, but can lead to some amazing growth. The more you do it, the easier it becomes, but it will never be as energising as what comes naturally to you.

Want to find out your natural personality type preferences and understand yourself better? I'd love to help.

Frustrations on a Friday ........... when you do your best work at the last minute but your colleague likes to finish with plenty of time to spare!

I'm like Tom and can be perceived as 'nagging' (especially by my kids!) as doing things last minute is not a happy place for me!
But I have got better at reducing my intensity ..... "How's it going?" seems to work better.

If you are more like Mark, don't forget that keeping people who are more like Tom aware of your progress, (even if it's just in your head for now), can help allay their concerns and improve team dynamics.

If this resonates and you'd like to know more about how I can help get the best from your team, do get in touch.
