You Can’t Give Away What You Don’t Possess

Why energy management is the quiet key to sustainable leadership

Case Study: Two Executives, One Boardroom

James and Michael are both senior executives at a global tech firm. James, an introvert by nature, is Head of Strategy. Michael, an extroverted Director of Operations, thrives on the buzz of back-to-back meetings and impromptu hallway conversations. Both are sharp, committed members of the executive team, and are regularly found in high-stakes discussions shaping the direction of the business.

To stay at his best James has learnt he needs to go for a quiet walk at lunchtime so he is ready for the afternoon meetings. Michael had several conversations with colleagues over lunch and is still going strong, feeding off the energy in the room, jumping from one session to another.

By the end of the day James is feeling quite drained. His contributions, though thoughtful and grounded, are becoming more internal. The background noise, small talk, and constant interaction are taking their toll.

Who resonates with you?

Great Leaders Are Made Not Born

“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born — that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That's nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.” Warren Bennis

Why the Best Leadership Isn’t About DNA, but Daily Decisions

There’s a comforting myth that floats around in leadership circles — that some people are just “natural born leaders.” They have the charisma, the confidence, the instincts, the spark. The rest of us? Well, good luck catching up.

What do you think?

The Value Is In The Struggle

“Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” — African Proverb

Last week I was listening to a leadership podcast where the subject was around the use of AI The point was made that AI can give you answers but at the cost of the struggle of reaching a solution. That resonated with me so here is my take on why the struggle is more important than the solution on it’s own.

The temptation is real: skip the struggle and go straight to the solution.

But when we do, we often rob ourselves of something far more valuable than the answer itself — the growth that comes from wrestling with the problem.
Let me show you what I mean.

Making Better Decisions Consistently

The Cost of a Single Choice: A Cautionary Tale

A project lead—quiet, methodical, and deeply committed—was tasked with guiding a cross-functional team through a complex product launch. Mike knew the risks, saw red flags, but said little in meetings where louder voices dominated. His inclination to process internally led to delayed feedback. A major flaw in the product wasn’t caught early. The result? A costly launch failure that damaged team morale and trust.

Mike didn't lack insight—he lacked a decision-making rhythm that supported his natural leadership style.

Cross-Cultural Miscommunication

I am back the reason for the two week break is I have just returned from a trip to south East Asia as part of the charitable work I undertake from time to time. I was reminded as I led a workshop on communication that I was not only navigating communication but communicating cross-culturally. The workshop was a lot of fun but I was aware that misunderstanding can happen easily and invisibly. As leaders in an increasingly cross-cultural world are you aware of how easily you can be misunderstood? Keep reading to see how this affects your leadership.

Have you ever confidently delivered a message, only to discover later that what your team heard was something entirely different?

Dealing With Imposter Syndrome

When Your Confidence is Quiet but Your Doubt is Loud

Back in the early days of Indra Nooyi’s rise at PepsiCo, as one of the few women and an immigrant navigating the towering halls of corporate America, she often felt like she didn’t belong. Despite her sharp mind and rock-solid performance, she once confessed to feeling like a fraud waiting to be exposed.

Now, if someone of Nooyi’s calibre wrestled with imposter syndrome, it is likely that many of you have experienced the same.

Especially for introverted leaders—those of you who think deeply, speak deliberately, and lead from the back of the room—this internal critic can be relentless. And here’s the truth: it doesn’t discriminate. Even in the C-suite, where the world assumes you’ve made it, imposter syndrome still whispers: “You’re not good enough.”

Following Your Flight Plan

I am sure many of you have been on a plane journey whether it’s for business or pleasure. I have never been trained as a Pilot but when you take your assigned seat you probably don’t give a second thought to whether the Pilot is trained has filed a proper flight plan and knows how to get to the destination. Usually, your Pilot has already filed a flight plan, clearly marking out the point of departure and the destination. You buckle up, trusting the Pilot will get you safely to where you're headed. Whilst the destination is clear the journey to it is not always smooth or direct. Throughout the flight, various factors like weather conditions, other air traffic, or unexpected turbulence might force adjustments, yet the Pilot’s focus (and probably the autopilot) never wavers from the destination. Leadership Coaching works much the same way.

Master The Matrix

The world of leadership is full of unseen forces shaping how you lead and how your team performs. One of the most powerful but often overlooked dynamics is what is known as The Support/Challenge Matrix, and it highlights your preference to naturally support or challenge those you lead.

Every leader leans naturally toward either high support (encouragement, empowerment, and guidance) or high challenge (accountability, high expectations, and tough conversations). Problems can arise when you are unaware of your tendency—whether you naturally support or challenge, leading to unintended consequences that can stifle growth, lower engagement, or create toxic environments.

When Perfectionism Kills Your Vision

Meet Daniel, the ambitious CEO of a growing tech company. With an eye for detail and an uncompromising standard for excellence, Daniel had a clear vision: to create the most innovative, user-friendly product in the industry. He had the roadmap, the resources, and a dedicated team ready to bring this vision to life.

But there was one problem—Daniel's version of success was flawless. Every prototype fell short of his expectations. Every marketing campaign was scrutinised to the point of paralysis. Any deviation from his perfect plan was met with frustration. What started as an inspiring vision became an unattainable standard that drained morale. Deadlines were missed, innovation stalled, and his once-energised team became disengaged. In chasing the illusion of perfection, Daniel killed his own vision.

Click on the link to see how to avoid this.

You Can’t Change What You Can’t See

In my role as a leadership development coach I have found that one of the most profound truths in leadership is this - you can’t change what you can’t see. Leadership isn’t just about strategy, vision, or execution—it’s about who you are as a person. The most effective leaders I know share one powerful trait: self-awareness. To put it simply to lead effectively you must know yourself to lead yourself. If you can’t lead yourself then I would say it is impossible to lead others effectively.

Self-aware leaders understand their strengths, recognise their blind spots, and take responsibility for their impact on others.
