Burnout Is HRâs Biggest Business Risk for 2026 - and the Data Proves It
A new survey has revealed something many HR teams already know far too well: burnout is rising fast, and 2026 may be the toughest year yet.
Nearly half of UK HR professionals now see burnout as the biggest business risk ahead. And while weâre supporting employees through heavy workloads, personal crises, and rising pressures, many in HR are running on empty themselves.
A few points stood out:
1. HR is absorbing too much emotional strain
The article notes that HR is increasingly becoming the organisationâs informal crisis line. By the time weâve supported everyone else, most of us have little energy left for our own needs. Emotional fatigue is becoming the norm.
2. The load on the profession is hitting a critical point
Experts quoted in the piece describe HRâs experience as chronic empathic load â the ongoing strain of managing other peopleâs challenges without adequate recovery time. This affects clarity, decision-making and the wider culture.
3. HR has more influence than ever, but not enough protection
Despite the strain, the profession is gaining a stronger voice at the top table. More HR leaders now report directly to CEOs and feel empowered to challenge decisions. But influence alone doesnât protect wellbeing. Without structural support, the pressure becomes unsustainable.
đĄ If organisations want healthy cultures in 2026, they must look after the wellbeing of their HR teams too.
This means realistic workload planning, dedicated mental health support and permission to set boundaries without judgement. With the right guidance and tools, like those offered through Flexible HR Solutions, organisations can give their HR teams the support they deserve.
Healthy HR equals a healthier organisation.
