When someone chooses to disclose abuse, it can be one of the most difficult – and most important – conversations of their life.

You’ll learn how to:
✔️ Explore why disclosures are difficult to make
✔️ Respond effectively to first-time disclosures
✔️ Understand the context and how to record/report
✔️ Provide signposting and referrals
✔️ Look after your own wellbeing after hearing a disclosure

Whether you’re in education, health, social care, or community work, this training provides practical tools to support both survivors and yourself.

🎉 Happy New Year from all of us at What’s The Debate! 🎉

As we head into 2025, we just want to take a moment to celebrate everything we achieved together in 2024.

Over the past year, we’ve grown so much in our work in tackling domestic abuse and s*xual violence – and we couldn’t have done it without our small team of amazing freelance facilitators!

A huge thank you to all the schools, charities and community groups who invited us in for assemblies, workshops, training sessions, or bought our resources. We have loved working with you and looking forward to more chances this year.

To the young people who got involved in workshops and peer mentoring – you’re the reason we do what we do. Thank you for showing up, engaging, and inspiring us with your energy and ideas.

We’ve got lots of exciting things planned for 2025 – new projects, resources, and opportunities we can’t wait to share with you!

Here’s to an even bigger and better year ahead. Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and empowering New Year!

The new RSHE guidance is apparently due for release tomorrow but there have been leaks stating that s*x education for under 9s will be banned, topics like domestic abuse, contraception and STIs won’t be discussed until 13 and schools won’t be able to teach gender identity!

I set up What’s The Debate to tackle domestic abuse and s*xual violence and decided to do this via RSHE because it can be a brilliant safeguarding tool to educate, raise awareness and prevent these issues. I didn’t decide to do this on a whim, I have worked in the field of domestic abuse and s*xual violence for nearly 20 years supporting children and young people as young as 5 years old. A lot of the young people I supported told me there weren’t taught things like consent, coercive control, abuse or even the correct names of their body parts. I also tell young people that I was subjected to domestic abuse and s*xual violence and I wasn’t educated on these topics at school.

Young people are already disproportionately affected by STIs. Sexual violence, s*xual bullying, misogyny and harassment in schools is such a major issue and the highest it’s ever been. P**n is a huge problem. The mental health of children and young people, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community, is at breaking point!

RSHE has always been age appropriate. It should meet the needs of the young people and take into account their voice and allow them to challenge their influences in a safe way as well as helping them to make safe, healthy and informed choices!

Restricting RSHE and for some ages, banning it, is only going to harm children and young people further. We will see an increase in abusive relationships, child on child abuse, exploitation, bullying, discrimination and so much more!

The only saving grace is once the guidance is published, it will be a draft guidance. It will need to go through public consultation and the guidance should be rewritten based on that consultation. So when that guidance comes out, please read it. It doesn’t matter if you work in education or not, read it as a parent, a nurse, a social worker, a trainer, as someone who is passionate about safeguarding, domestic abuse, LGBTQ+, mental health and when you see links asking for responses, please put forward your thoughts and views!

We are extremely passionate about Peer Mentoring. Children and young people can be faced with so many uncertainties, they can struggle with anxiety, their sense of belonging, their identity and find it difficult where to get support from. Peer Mentoring provides an opportunity for mentees to feel supported and listened too while the mentors can enhance their skills and use their experiences to build positive relationships and experiences.

We believe Peer Mentoring can really make a change to children and young people's lives, for both the mentee and the mentor, however we feel the best mentoring programmes work when there has been effective and appropriate training and guidance.

That's why we have our own Peer Mentoring Training Programme for children and young people. What's The Debate have been involved in many exciting mentoring programmes such as:
💛Playground Buddies
💛Healthy Relationship Champions
💛Peer Facilitators
💛Sexual Harassment Champions
💛 Well-Being Buddies
