Have you ever thought about your Superpowers?
As I conduct research with FDs/MDs and CFOs/CEOs for an upcoming CIMA seminar, one fascinating theme keeps emerging: the discovery and harnessing of superpowers in the journey to leadership. Every person has a unique story, and their greatest strengths are often rooted in traits they initially perceived as challenges.
Let me share the stories of three remarkable leaders who discovered their superpowers & rose to the top. (Fictional persons have been used to protect people's names).
Emma's Journey: The Power of Attention to Detail 🔢
Emma always had a knack for noticing the most minor discrepancies in numbers. Early in her career, she felt her meticulous nature slowed her down. As she progressed to a Financial Director role, her superpower of attention to detail became her greatest asset. Emma identified a significant error in a major financial report that could have cost the company millions. Her precision saved the company financially and built a foundation of trust. Promoted to Managing Director, Emma continued to uphold the highest standards, driving the company to new heights.
David's Path: The Power of Analytical Thinking 📈
David saw patterns in financial data, whereas others saw numbers and charts. Initially, he struggled to communicate his complex analyses to stakeholders. Determined to bridge this gap, David honed his communication skills. As a Financial Director, his ability to extract strategic insights became his superpower. During a market downturn, his thorough analysis revealed hidden opportunities, helping the company navigate the crisis. David's strategic vision guided the company's long-term planning and innovation strategies, solidifying its market leadership.
Liam's Story: The Power of ADHD Traits 🧠
Liam was diagnosed with ADHD around ten years ago; he often felt different from his peers. His boundless energy and tendency to hyper-focus were seen as challenges. However, as he grew in his career, he realised these traits were his superpowers. As a Financial Director, Liam's laser focus on tasks meant he could dive deeply into projects and see them through to completion with exceptional results. His ability to think creatively and dynamically allowed him to develop innovative financial strategies that set the company apart. Promoted to Managing Director, Liam used his unique perspective to foster a culture of innovation and agility, driving the company's growth & adaptability in a rapidly changing market.
These stories illustrate how recognising and harnessing inherent traits can propel professionals to leadership positions, transforming potential challenges into powerful assets. So, what are your superpowers?
