A bit of a marmite shot where I have used the shade of a tree to really darken the background whilst the swan was still in full sun. Exposing for the sunny side of the swan meant underexposing, darkening the whole image, correctly exposing the lit side of the swan and rendering the shadows almost black giving this high contrast image.

Another image of the Whooper Swan. Lighting is everything with images. The previous image was taken where the swan was in the shadow of a tree and the background was still in full sun. This image was where the sun had gone behind clouds and so the swan and background were both in shade. Both have their merits but personally I would have loved to have got this pose but with the previous images lighting. Unfortunately it moved back into the water before those lighting conditions appeared again. Maybe another visit should be planned?

Made the most of a very co-operative Whooper Swan over the weekend. Lovely to see this species so close up.

I was booked for 1:1 tuition yesterday by a client who wanted to iron out some queries about exposure compensation and focus issues and how to use what under different scenarios. At the end of the day I put everything in to practise by asking them to photograph this male Tufted Duck against backlit water. Dark blacks and bright whites against bright water is always a good scenario to ensure the client understands the exposure after a day of tuition. I'm glad to say they passed with flying colours!

Capturing the perfect image of a bird in flight is very difficult to do but I think I have managed it in this one. This is one of my favourite images I have taken of a Bewick's Swan. Everything just fits in to place and ticks all the boxes. The evening lighting was gorgeous, the bird was coming into land at exactly the right angle, and the feet down and the wing tips curled up all just add to the image. Very pleased with this capture.

Well Happy New Year to you all!
It's been ages since I've picked up a camera (bad news for a photographer i know!!) so I decided to blow the dust off it this morning and hone my macro technique with some leaf close ups. Using a bit of flash from behind gave me the result of highlighting the vein structure. I like the way the veins on the surface could also be mistaken for a landscape with rivers and streams running through it.

Ian Butler Photography November Newsletter 2016

This year has gone so quickly that I can't believe Christmas is just around the corner. A lot has happened this year with a 5 week trip to Israel to monitor the bird of prey migration across the Eilat mountains, a brand new website design and I'm pleased to announce a new set of greeting cards.

Turquoise-browed Motmot from Costa Rica. Absolutely stunning bird and to be woken up by their little weezing calls for two mornings was just the cherry on top.

I've spent most of today re-filing my files and folders on my computer so I know I have all of my images in my Lightroom catalogue. It's interesting what you find when everything is organised! Here's a Spoonbill in front of the setting sun taken from a session in Hungary back in 2013. Enjoy the weekend!

Eurasian Spoonbill, Hungary, May, 2013.
