Thanks for dropping by if you're one of lots of views on my page recently!

While I set up to work for people with social care or health needs I now work for ANYONE.

My standard charge is just £20 per hour. It's lower for social care customers but I may add a bit of mileage if I'm traveling to you.

This week I will be painting, being the helping hand for a tidy indoors and out, giving budgeting and online banking support and helping someone call HMRC 🙄!

Since I put a little post on FB the other week I've met several lovely new customers and had some very nice feedback. I've been pruning and hedge cutting, helping clear out a shed, fixing little things and painting. Next week I'm booked to help with putting up some ambitious crimbo decorations!

I HAVE CAPACITY for new work for customers with social care needs. If you need help with any plan or practical task, or a little bit of everything (tidying, fixing, sorting, shifting stuff, decorating, talking, setting up, getting out...) drop me a line.

Direct Help can't be summed up easily. I quite like the term "Modern Home Help" for what I offer. What do you think?

So here is a bit of a change. While Direct Help will continue offering practical support in your home and garden, I have also started a new service - Navigate Professional Support and Advice.

Navigate provides ongoing support with taking control of your life, such as recruiting your own help, moving home or other big life steps, or dealing with difficult issues such as making plans for changes in health or managing caring responsibilities. As a Social Worker of many years’ experience, I want to put that at the disposal of people locally and with a total focus on the person and their family, only withdrawing when I am asked to. All without charging "Independent Social Worker" rates of £50+ per hour. I will charge just £25ph.

Looking to see what Direct Help can do? Well, lately I have been helping some new customers with...

- Fiddly DIY jobs that always get overlooked,
- Buying and setting up equipment to help stay independent,
- Decluttering and taking things to charity shops,
- Lifts to visit family in hospital,
- Putting up curtains,
- Fixing up (another) shed and roof,
- Weeding and pruning (being the hands, not the expert!)
- A major garage tidy and shifting heavy stuff around.

What I call ‘practical support’ continues to be defined by you.
Whatever it is, I charge £16 an hour for hours 1-4 then only £14 ph for the rest of the day.
Add £3 per visit for travel to other locations.
I usually go as far as Pershore, Stourport, Malvern and Droitwich.

I might not have posted much but there's been plenty of support given these last few weeks! Here's a few examples.

I helped Mrs J with a major attic clear out and accompanied her on runs to the tip.
Mrs M wanted help to reorganise a room, fit some shelving and write down some reminiscences.
Mr S is working through a long list of small DIY jobs with my assistance.
Mrs A and Mrs W have sheds requiring repairs, as well as a host of little jobs I am happy to fit in as and when, such as basic garden care, painting, making doors close properly, and helping with re-organising. It has all been very enjoyable!

Many thanks to all my customers so far. Next time I will have some feedback from them.

The big news for Direct Help this month is that I will be accepted onto the Community Services Directory at Worcestershire County Council. This is where all the health and social care micro-businesses are checked out and publicised.
However, I am not rushing to go to the next level just yet. 5 ongoing customers, 2 new ones last week and plenty of bookings ahead is great and busy enough. BUT I’m always in favour of planning ahead so do let me know if you need a hand with your home, garden and the ordinary stuff of life!

How did we end up with 'home care' for those that need their bodies tending to or help to get the basics seen to each day, and then a 'handyperson' or trade for the practical things? Being caring and being practical should not be seen as different!

In my first support work roles working with people with a Learning Disability I did not see a problem with helping independence by helping look after the home. It was still people skills I was using, whether painting together, assembling flat pack furniture, having a clear out. I was never taught to “just do it for them”. With working age disabled people this is unthinkable too. So why has this idea not really taken hold for older people and those with caring responsibilities, or both?

Since starting Direct Help I have met several people who have needed help because things in their life were difficult. This calls for more than someone to wield tools and something better than a bit of sympathy. We need to define this by what it IS not what it is not, and keep it simple. So, everyone, welcome to my…
Caring helper service? A handy and kind service? The practical support service….?
For now I’m sticking with a HELP service. I'm not the first but this really needs to catch on!

Hello.
Today I thought I’d let you know the inspiration for starting Direct Help.

It was simple. I visited my mum to find a long list of little jobs waiting for me. A box needed taking down from the loft, the shed needed tidying, a piece of furniture needed moving a bit, there were leaves in a gutter. Nothing exceptional, nothing needing an expert, just the stuff of life. My mum said, ‘I wonder what people do when they don’t have family to call on to do this kind of thing?’

According to Ageing Well Without Children (www.awwoc.org ), one in five of us over 50 have no children. This does not mean that no-one will be there – you can have many kinds of family and a good friendship network may well be built up in the years other spent preoccupied with our children. But it seems there is an overall negative effect when you hear that those with no children are 25% more likely to need to go into a care home later in life.

There are many kinds of help available but there is a gap here that a carer, handywoman, friend or professional can’t fill. And we don’t really have a name for it. I’m pleased to be part of a new type of support. It seems mostly we are calling these ‘help’ services. And we are different because we are practical but motivated by a wish to work alongside and get to know people.
