👷‍♂️Can AI do our QS admin?

We’ve been quietly testing AI tools at Vidos — not to be on trend, but to see if they can actually help us do the work better.

So we gave ChatGPT a real task:
👉 Draft a contractually complaint notice.

What we got back was... decent. Okay.
It was well structured, mostly accurate, and a good head start. It was able to generally understand the required output and interpret the information we fed into it.

But here’s the thing — the last 20% took as long as doing it from scratch. The last 20% is where the experience, expertise and commercial nous come into play. It needed sense-checking, rewording, contract references, and a tone adjustment.

We’re not writing AI usage off.
We think there’s real potential to use AI for first drafts, structure, and summarising. But for now, we’re keeping it firmly in the “assistant” box — not the “replacement” box.

What matters to us at Vidos is this:
👉 Does it make the output better?
👉 Does it save real time — or just shift the work around?

📝 What AI can’t do

Earlier in this series, we shared our experiment using AI to draft a contract notice, and asked whether it actually saves time.

It got us thinking about what AI really can’t do. Sure, it can help with documents. It can pull out clauses, suggest wording, even structure a draft.

But it can’t sense risk the way an experienced QS can. It won’t catch the hesitation in a meeting that tells you something’s being left unsaid.

It doesn’t carry the weight, or accountability, of a commercial decision.

At Vidos, we think the best QSs mix knowledge with intuition. That balance of facts and feel. Data and judgement. It’s what turns a good answer into the right answer.

We’ll keep testing tools — because ignoring them would be silly.

But we’ll keep doubling down on the human side of commercial thinking, because that’s where the real value lives.

⏱️Did AI actually save us time?

On Tuesday, we mentioned that we had asked ChatGPT to help draft a contract notice — a bread and butter deliverable.

It did a decent job on the structure. But once we’d corrected the tone, added the right references and rewrote a few key bits, it probably didn’t save us much time at all.

That said — it gave us a starting point. And when you're under pressure, that could be valuable.

At Vidos, we’re just trying to figure out what’s actually useful — and what’s more trouble than it’s worth.

So here’s a question for you 👇

The role of the QS has always been about more than just numbers. But in light of tech and AI developments it feels like there's a shift.

We’ve been asking ourselves:
– Is the job becoming more technical, or more relational?
– Is our value in what we know, or how we think?
– Are we expected to just track cost — or shape outcomes?

At Vidos, we believe the modern QS adds value by:

✔ Translating complexity into clarity
✔ Spotting risk early — and saying something
✔ Supporting teams with structure, not just spreadsheets
✔ Staying commercially aware without losing the human touch

Vidos was founded by Peter Adeleye — a Chartered QS with a clear vision for how commercial support could be delivered differently.
Later joined by Micah Stennett, the two brought together deep sector experience, shared values, and a desire to build a consultancy that just… made more sense.

We’re a commercial consultancy providing quantity surveying and operational commercial support across construction and FM projects.
From housing to highways, infrastructure to design-led work — we help clients stay on top of cost, contract, and risk.
