Fabulous day out at Clumber Park. FYI if taking orange route there’s a shortage of markers about step 5. We got horribly lost and walked miles more than planned. No signal either! Scary! Great place though

Well, what a strange few days it has been!!!

Last night we took the opportunity to burn a stack of paperwork: old employment contracts, sales trackers, things that will 'come in useful one day' and some recent client documents.

Why? I hear you say! Are you mad?

I'm officially retiring in December as I've decided not to wait for Covid to sort itself out as that will take years, in my opinion.

So this morning I've said goodbye to one of my long-term clients and announced to another team that I will be leaving.

All my working life I have worked hard, always looked for the next opportunity and now I'm not going to do it anymore which is a really weird feeling.

I will miss the clients and all the networking. It will leave a big hole which I am now planning to fill!

Wow - how weird a post is this?!!!!!

Nearly all businesses have had to 'pivot' and 'adapt'. But rather than a stop gap many are embracing the changes and looking for more ways to keep agile under these difficult circumstances.

This article is interesting as it gives a snapshot of the impact and the changes that are here to stay so it is not a stop gap after all!

I suspect we are seeing a spike in people starting up their own business. As a small business owner I can obviously identify with that and, like others, I have learnt some lessons along the way which I am happy to share if it helps the newbies.

💡 Have a business plan - doesn't have to be swish and you don't need to share it but it will focus your mind on what you need to bring in (and when), to cover your costs.

💡 Get a great accountant who works 'with' you and is proactive.

💡 If you don't have the skills at the start you might need to budget to buy in some help or buy some training.

💡 Network - this is one of my best discoveries! There's lots of groups out there - find the one(s) that suit you and commit to it/them. They are usually very supportive, friendly and can be a source of business or referrals over time. But don't turn up and expect an order on your first visit (although, I confess this did happen to me!).

💡 Take advantage of all the free help and support events such as how to do your social media, business coaching, selling without sales, etc. Be like a sponge!

We all had to start somewhere! Any connections out there willing to share their top tips?

So as you reflect on this week -

🤔 How long is your 'to do' list now?
🤔 Do you feel satisfied with your achievements?
🤔 What has surprised you in a good way?
🤔 What are you dreading about next week already?

I hate to see business owners struggling so by all means arrange a free call and pick my brains on how we can make future weeks a bit more manageable for you!

It's easy to presume that everyone knows how to use Zoom and is comfortable with it as we have 'all' been using it since March!

But for those that thought this was just a hiccup are now realising the new normal requires new skills and it can be a bit scary if you aren't confident with Zoom.

I am offering a free 30 minute session to help you set it up and test the microphone, camera and background to ensure you shine in your next meeting.

It is not a sales ploy - just a genuine offer of help!

I was looking through some finance files and it reminded me that this time last year I was not in the same financial position that I am now.

At the time I didn't share it but I was close to giving up. I'd expected to be uber-busy on holiday cover, had lost an important client and generally was wondering how long I could last.

Purpose of posting this is - fortunes CAN turn around so quickly but you have to be 'out there' so people can see you. If you are struggling sometimes 2 heads are better than one and networking is a great way to share, seek support and a bit of love!

Sadly all this support the government is offering will need to be paid for somehow, sometime.

My thoughts are that these seem possible contenders (for clarity I am not supporting these, but saying these are my predictions!)....

Drop the subsidy on electric charging points - October 2021

Tax working from home as a BIK - April 2021

Councils to add charge for home offices - April 2021

Convert High Street retail units into housing - from October 2021

Increase tax for online retailers - October 2021

Reduce the foreign aid budget - April 2022

Allow refugees to stay in the UK for a huge fee - October 2021

Move the pension age back by 2 years - October 2022

Increase tax on utilities for homes - October 2021

What are your thoughts on my predictions - and please share your own? Who knows when our memories pop up on FaceBook in a few years time we can see how mad or how right we were!!
