Last year, we were out and about, across the UK and beyond, delivering hands-on, creative and fun capacity-strengthening workshops.

Weโ€™ve worked with research programmes, community groups and mixed teams who want to build skills that help them get closer to their aims, whether thatโ€™s developing participatory approaches, strengthening reflexive practice, or feeling more confident sharing their work.

Everything we do is tailored. Recent sessions have included planning your own podcast, introductions to research, participatory and co-production research, and working with power, positionality and reflexivity. Courses can be online or in person, and we regularly work with people who are trying these things for the first time.

If youโ€™re thinking about developing your teamโ€™s capabilities and want to talk through what might be useful, get in touch with us at SCL for a chat.

As our Backlash, Resistance and the Path to Gender Justice mini-series comes to an end, we wanted to share a final reflection โ€” and to say thank you.

The final episode (part two of the finale) brings the series to a close by moving from analysis to action. The conversation focuses on what it really takes to move beyond gender awareness towards gender-responsive and gender-transformative practice. Across the discussion, themes of power, participation, intersectionality and context come through strongly, alongside the practical choices researchers and practitioners face when working amid backlash.

One message runs through the series as a whole: gender cannot be treated as an add-on. It is embedded in everyday life, systems and crises, and engaging with it ethically requires reflexivity, collaboration and attention to power.

Weโ€™re very grateful to all of the guests who contributed their thinking, experience and time across the six episodes. These conversations were generous, challenging and deeply grounded in practice.

A particular thank you to Ishrat Jahan for being such a thoughtful co-host throughout the series, helping to guide the discussions with care and clarity. And thank you to Nazia Zebin for her support behind the scenes, especially in helping us navigate some of the practical and contextual challenges of working across Bangladesh โ€” support that was essential to making this series possible.

If youโ€™ve joined us partway through, all episodes are available to catch up on. The earlier episodes are all available wherever you get your podcasts, just search for โ€˜Connecting Citizens to Scienceโ€™. And if these conversations resonate, please do share the series with colleagues and peers who are grappling with questions of gender, power and justice in their own work.

Weโ€™ve just released Part One of our two-part finale in the Gender Justice podcast series, Backlash, Resistance, and the Path to Gender Justice.

When we recorded this final conversation, it became clear that it covered so many areas that are relevant for people working across health, rights and development that we needed to give it more space! So this is the first of two linked episodes ๐Ÿ˜

In Part One, we explore gender as a complex social system and look at why those dynamics become even more visible during crisis conditions. We also reflect on how gender shapes everyday life, opportunity and vulnerability, and why it cannot be treated as an add-on in research, programming or policy.

If youโ€™re joining this series for the first time, itโ€™s also worth exploring the earlier episodes. Across the mini-series weโ€™ve spoken with researchers, activists and practitioners about how gender justice is shaped, challenged and negotiated in different contexts.

As guest Nusaiba Sultana explains, integrating activism into everyday culture can help people engage with issues they might otherwise avoid โ€” especially around gender justice. Behavioural science also shows that subtle messages can sometimes be more effective than telling, opening space for learning and dialogue without defensiveness.

In a time of rising gender backlash and shrinking civic space, these approaches are vital for building solidarity, sustaining joy, and protecting those involved.

This week marks three years since The Stop, Collaborate and Listen Agency was founded. What started as a conversation between co-founders Sarah Glover and Dr. Kim Ozano has grown into a thriving agency that approaches research and dissemination in a way that connects people, practice and policy.

From day one, our aim has been to challenge the usual boundaries of research and knowledge sharing. We wanted to create a space where rigorous research and creative communication sit side by side, ensuring that insights donโ€™t just live in reports but reach the people who can use them.

Over these three years, weโ€™ve worked with incredible clients who have trusted us to capture experiences, test new approaches and share stories in accessible ways. Each project has expanded our knowledge, often in directions we didnโ€™t expect, and weโ€™re deeply grateful to those who have supported us through this journey.

Looking forward, the next 12 months are especially exciting. Weโ€™ll be:

โ€ข Continuing to develop our specialist understanding of the Welsh social care landscape.
โ€ข Contributing to the evidence base for international policymaking, with a particular focus on gender and equity.
โ€ข Exploring innovative and creative media projects that stretch what dissemination can look like.

To our clients, collaborators and community: thank you. Your support has helped us grow and shape the agency we are today.

And to those we havenโ€™t yet worked with โ€” weโ€™d love to talk about how we can create meaningful change together in the years ahead!

This can shape access to health services, civic space, and rights for everyone. Our final mini-series episode in the Connecting Citizens to Science on research capacity strengthening is now live!

In this episode, we speak with inspiring clinician-researchers from the PACTS programme who share how pursuing a PhD, embedded within real-world health programmes, can strengthen clinical practice and lead to meaningful, sustainable change.

From improving sickle cell care to mentoring future health leaders, they show how research, when grounded in context, becomes a tool for systems transformation.

๐Ÿ“Œ Research isnโ€™t separate from practice, itโ€™s central to it. And when supported early and embedded meaningfully, it can shift how health systems work for everyone.

๐ŸŽง Listen now to hear how these clinician-researchers are learning by doing, influencing policy, and building capacity for the long term.

At SCL, we believe media professionals, journalists, producers, content creator, arenโ€™t just there to โ€œtranslateโ€ research once itโ€™s finished. Theyโ€™re key partners in the research process itself.

Thatโ€™s why in the programme, journalists and researchers were trained together. They learned how to speak each otherโ€™s language. They collaborated on how to communicate the science accurately, and in the spaces where people actually receive informationโ€”like radio, newspapers, or WhatsApp.

And importantly, media content became more than just outreach. Interviews, articles, and podcasts were treated as data, evidence of how communities understand health issues and where policies or services could be improved. Thatโ€™s research capacity strengthening in action.

We also want to talk honestly about language. Terms like โ€œnarrativeโ€ or โ€œstorytellingโ€ can be powerful, but theyโ€™re not always taken seriously in academic settings. At SCL, we use storytelling rigorously and respectfully. These are co-created, evidence-informed accounts, are no less valuable than a journal article, and often more accessible.

So, if youโ€™re thinking about how to use podcasting, creative media, or storytelling as part of your research or communication strategyโ€”not just to share outcomes, but to shape themโ€”weโ€™d love to chat.

Research capacity strengthening (RCS) is about equipping researchers, health workers, and communities to take a problem from initial question through to real-world solutions.

When RCS is embedded in implementation projects, it fosters local leadership, promotes equity, and bridges the gap between evidence and practice. In our new three-part mini-series, we explore how the PACTS project has woven RCS into patient-centred sickle cell disease management across sub-Saharan Africa.

Listen to how RCS drives better patient care, supports knowledge translation and uptake and why it matters for global health.
