My Peritoneal Dialysis Journey
This is my story.
Not the polished version. Not the version where everything happens for a reason, every struggle teaches you something, and somehow you come out the other side grateful for it all.
This is the real version.
The version where some days I feel strong and some days I don't. Days when I can deal with whatever is thrown at me, and days when I want to ask, “Why me?”
There is fear. There is anger. There is frustration. There is exhaustion. There are moments when I look at my life and wonder how I ended up here.
And then there are the moments that remind me just how much I've already been through.
My journey with kidney disease didn't start when I was told I needed dialysis. It didn't start when I had to learn how to do peritoneal dialysis. It didn't even start with my kidney transplant.
It started before I was old enough to understand what was happening to me.
It started the day I was born.
From birth, I had a condition called bilateral vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). In simple terms, the valves between my kidneys and bladder weren't working properly and were too wide, allowing urine to travel backwards from my bladder towards my kidneys.
That backwards flow caused countless urinary tract infections and, over time, serious damage to my kidneys. Eventually, both of my kidneys developed grade 5 scarring.
When I was still a baby, I underwent two operations in an attempt to correct the problem. The hope was that the operations would stop the reflux and protect my kidneys from further damage.
Sadly, they didn't work.
The damage to my kidneys had already begun, and despite the attempts to fix the problem, my kidney function would continue to deteriorate
Of course, I don't remember those early days.
I was a baby, I didn't understand the hospital visits, the infections, the operations or what was happening inside my body.
But even though I don't remember the beginning of my story, I've lived with the consequences of it for my entire life.
And eventually, those consequences would lead me to kidney failure, dialysis, a kidney transplant, and years later, back to dialysis again.
This is the story of how I got here.
But more importantly, this is the story of what it has actually felt like to live through it
And this is only the beginning.
There is so much more to this story, and I will be sharing it all — the good, the bad, the frightening moments, the struggles, and everything in between.
This is simply where my story began.
I'll also be sharing a video alongside this to help explain my journey and give a better understanding of what happened, why it happened, and how it has brought me to where I am today.
This is only the first chapter. There is much more to come.
Videos wand write ups and more details will be uploaded to a new page if you would like to follow my journey https://www.facebook.com/share/1DNgo9aZsQ/
