Follow for the latest news and updates from our team. York Archaeology is the commercial archaeology branch of York Archaeological Trust. Founded in 1972, as an independent charity and headed up by a Board of Trustees, York Archaeological Trust was set up to help preserve the vast collection of archaeological deposits that lay within 2,000 years of York’s history in response to threats posed to th

e City’s archaeological heritage at the time. Over five decades, the YAT fieldwork team in York have carried out countless projects across the north of England, including the internationally significant Coppergate and Hungate excavations. The team are dedicated to sharing our discoveries and inspiring members of the public to engage with the archaeology around them.

As Volunteer Week comes to a close, we wanted to share some of these fascinating items. They were uncovered by, Madeline Pelletier, an MA Public History student at the University of York, who spent the last semester with our Collections and Archives team, working with the JORVIK Viking Centre archives on rationalisation and cataloging.

Madeline has written two blog posts about her placement experience and the work she has been involved in. You can read them on our website:
