I know they’re our stockist. I know we sent the cards. But actually standing in Itoya in Tokyo and seeing my artwork on the shelves… that’s a different feeling altogether 🥹❤️

You spend so much time working on the next thing that you sometimes forget to enjoy what you and your tiny team have built.

It was an honour to meet with Itoya’s lovely buyers again. So lovely to catch up, and we’re very grateful that our designs have a place in this beautiful store.

Our handmade Tiny Fluff doughnut came along as a gift too. There were lots of cute noises I think he’s going to be very happy in his new home 🍩🥰

Then came two hours of stationery browsing. Frank knew the risks when he married me 🤣

Tomorrow we’re off to the trade show 🇯🇵

From York to Tokyo 🇬🇧✈️🇯🇵

When Frank and I started Lola Design in 2015, we had no idea that my artwork would one day take us all the way to Japan.

Itoya was one of the first international retailers to believe in our greeting cards and gifts, and they’ve been part of the Lola story since the early days.
After working together for all these years, we’re finally travelling to Tokyo to visit them in person and we genuinely feel incredibly honoured.

We’ll also be visiting Tokyo Lifestyle Week to learn more about Japanese design, stationery, gifting and retail.

There are meetings to prepare for, catalogues to pack and lots to learn. I’ll be sharing some of the business journey along the way.

That “little hobby” might change your life. ✨

I’d dabbled in a bit of origami here and there, so when I was asked how big I could make a paper swan, my answer was basically, “Let’s find out.” 🦢😂

Last year, that little experiment turned into seven giant origami swans for Chiswick house.

That’s what I love about creative hobbies. You start making something just for fun, follow an idea to see where it goes, and suddenly you’re doing something you never imagined.

What’s the creative hobby or crazy idea have you been meaning to try? ✨

Double-tap if maths made you cry 🙋🏻‍♀️

Very glad I survived it, because these days I get to spend my time sketching and painting hedgehogs for greeting cards instead 🦔

That said, running a creative business still involves far more numbers than I was led to believe, stock, print quantities, margins and wholesale prices…

Thankfully, Frank has the brain for that side of Lola.

I bring the hedgehogs. He counts them. 😂

Which school subject were you most relieved to leave behind? Please tell me maths wasn’t just my personal nemesis. 😂

Running a creative small business is extremely glamorous… 🫣🤣

One minute I’m painting wildlife, designing greeting cards or making Tiny Fluffs. The next, I’m answering suspicious DMs, avoiding admin and building an entire trade-show stand for someone who promises to “come back later.” 😂

Eleven years of running Lola Design and the icks keep coming, but I still wouldn’t swap this wonderfully chaotic creative life.
