Celebrating 40 years since being awarded the Churchill Fellowship, Keith looks back on his journey and shares a few words of wisdom, pointing out that innovation requires courage.

When you introduce a new way of doing things, you might get "shot at" in the name of tradition, but keep pressing on!

40 years, one mission. 🕰️

In 1986, Keith Barley set out on the Churchill Fellowship that would change the face of British conservation. Back then, he was the "radical" with a ladder and a question: How do we save Britain’s medieval glass from the invisible enemy of corrosion? From the first apprenticeship at the then-newly formed Glaziers Trust to pioneering the EPG systems that protect our national treasures today, it’s been a journey of "decade blocks."
We’ve grown; the technology has evolved, but the heart at the bench remains exactly the same.

EPG - Environmental Protective Glazing - is a secondary glazing system that allows for internal ventilation, creating as near museum conditions as can be achieved within the architectural setting.

Last month, we were part of the annual stained glass study tour, where historic sites, churches and, of course, stained glass took centre stage!

We kicked off the day with a visit to our studio in Dunnington, where the group had a chance to look at some of our projects on the bench.
This was followed by a visit to St Nicholas’ Church nearby, which features a window created by Helen in 2009, and concluded with a tour of where Helen offered some wonderful insights into her 2004 Pilgrim window!

VOTING CLOSES 1st FEBRUARY. Barley Studio's Director and stained glass artist Helen Whittaker is delighted to have one of her works shortlisted by the Association of English Cathedrals to the final 12 for 'England's Favourite Stained Glass Window'.

Helen's 14 geometric grisaille lights were designed and made for the 'New Processional Way', created in 2000 by architect Jane Kennedy as a Millennium Project for Ely Cathedral. The New Processional Way links the Lady Chapel to the Cathedral restoring the original passageway used by the medieval monks.

Helen's windows are in great company, from the 14th-century Jesse at Wells Cathedral and the 15th-century Great East window of York Minster to Alan Younger's 20th-century Rose window at St Albans Cathedral. Helen is the only contemporary artist featured!

To cast your vote please visit englishcathedrals.co.uk. Voting ends on 1st February!

Barley Studio stained glass conservation featured in The Times today, 5th November 2025

As our thoughts turn to Remembrance this weekend, our team are honoured to be working on this very special memorial window from St Lawrence's Church in York.
Designed by the Arts and Crafts artist Joan Fulleylove, the window commemorates Thomas Ableson Harpley, sometime Vicar of the Church, and his son Robert Ableson Harpley, who was killed in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916.
A towering 8.5m high, the window features scenes of York and Amiens flanking a standing soldier crowned with the stars of Heaven. Above, the Holy Grail is shown surrounded by saints kneeling in adoration.

🙏 Our work is generously supported by the War Memorials Trust.
With thanks to Times photographer James Glossop.
