Today I have an advice for "Common-Law Wives". Listen ladies, life is short and you never know what the future holds or when a life would come to an end. You don't have to be a Lawyer to think of the legal issues; the fact that you plan for the future and 'your interests' doesn't mean that you are being mean. The bottom line is that Common-Law relationships are not recognized in Grenada. So you have choices: Sign an agreement on division of assets in the event of a breakup; Never and I mean NEVER let go of your receipts of whatever contribution you would have made to that relationship; Do things together, don't let the man purchase all the materials with YOUR money or monies that were accumulated by the both of you (this usually comes back to bite you); Put the bills in both of your names; Don't go to the bank and take out a loan in your name only, then take out the money yourself and give to the man, leaving no record that it was for the both of you (togetherness). Remember, looking after your best interests does not mean that you are mean or that you envision something bad to happen. It just means that you are playing it safe. This will save persons some tears and Lawyer fees in the long run. Be Smart! When the LAW is not on your side, you be on the side of the LAW!
