TODAY'S TIP ON FISHING REELS:
#4: OFFSHORE REELS

SPINNING REELS
The spinning reel is accurate and a popular choice for many fishermen. The one thing about the spinning reel is that you must learn when to release the reel. If you release too soon, then your line can end up going behind you in the opposite direction you intended, and if you release too late, then your line will cast wildly too close for comfort.

SURF FISHING REELS
Surf fishing reels were designed particularly for big game fish in mind. These reels are great because you can cast from the beach and cast a great distance.
Surf fishing reels utilize simplicity to the maximum and offer outstanding control that is hard to find with other reels. With surf fishing reels, you will also have wide applicative use, which means that you can fish for a wide selection of different fish. It is a highly adaptable reel that can be used for multiple scenarios.

TROLLING REELS
Trolling reels were designed for big game fishing. They will be able to handle heavier line test because that is what is required for catching big game fish. Because they were designed with trolling in mind, you will also find that trolling reels have a good drag. Trolling reels are also smooth when reeling in bigger fish. There are certain reels that simply cannot handle big game fishing combat, but a trolling reel is guaranteed to be easy on reeling them in.

Today's Tip: CHOOSING THE BEST REEL
#3: REEL CHOICE (Saltwater Reels)

To be successful at fishing, the combination of reel, rod, and line must be right. Fishing is a rare sport that combines serenity with fierce competition. When looking for the perfect fishing reel, first determine your experience level followed by the type of fish you want to catch. When you are setting out on your fishing adventure, first determine the type of reel you will be using on the water because there are differences based on the reels you use. For instance, freshwater reels are designed for fishing in lakes, rivers and streams; whereas, saltwater reels work best in bays and oceans.

Types of Reels:
Spincast: This type of reel has a closed face. All the important parts are kept inside, under the nose cone. The line comes out of a little hole in the cover. You see a lot outfits designed for children sporting this type of reel, because it is the easiest to use. To use a spincast reel, you press the button on the back of the reel during your forward cast. The line peels out, and you let go of the button the line stops. Its very easy to get the hang of this reel, but you sacrifice some accuracy and distance.

Baitcasting: This is the probably the most difficult to master, because the spool turns when you cast. The spool must be kept under control so as not to turn into a nasty nest of line. It works great with heavier lines and lures, and is considered very accurate. But, because it can take a while to master casting with this type of real, they tend to be used only by experienced anglers.

Spinning: This is the most popular reel, it has an open faced design, it is easier to use than a baitcasting reel and more accurate than a spincast. It’s versatile. It has great line capacity (can put a good amount of line on it) and you can usually buy one with an extra spool, making it easy to change out your line while your on the water. Though it doesn’t perform as well when heavier line (20 pounds +) is required.

There is one more term you are going to run into around reels that you absolutely need to understand, and that is:
***Drag: This is the mechanism that allows you to set how much resistance a fish feels when it pulls on the line. The tighter you set the drag, the more resistance the fish feels. You want to set the resistance tight enough that it tires out your fish, but not so tight that the line gets over stressed or breaks.

TODAY'S TIP: FISHING LURES

LURE FISHING is one of the most exciting ways of catching predatory fish because there is a extensive list of fish that will gobble these plastic, metal or wooden creations that these fish would mistake them as real fish/food.

There are various types of Lures.
*Spinners and spoons are usually made of metal and either wobble or spin through the water in the same way as real fish.
*Plugs are made of wood or plastic and work in a number of ways: along the surface of the water, in mid-water, or deep along the bottom.
*Surface lures, also known as top water lures. They float and resemble prey that is on top of the water. They can make a popping sound from a concave-cut head, a burbling sound from "side fins" or scoops or a buzzing commotion from one or several propellers.
*Swimbait, a minnow-like soft plastic bait that is reeled like a plug. Some have swimming tails.

In order to be effective, lures must have the visual ability to attract fish and intrigue them with the way they move through the water. Most lures are designed to look and behave like dying, injured, or fast moving fish and are frequently used in trolling and casting fishing.

TODAY'S TIP ON CHOOSING THE BEST ROD FOR FISHING
#2: ROD LENGTH

Rods length typically ranges from 6 to 12 feet. Choosing the right length will depend on what type of fishing you plan to do, what fish you are aiming to catch, the location where you fish, and the water type. Another factor that will determine how to choose length is your own experience, strength and build. Here are a few tips:

*A beginner should start off with a rod that's short enough to help with control and the development of technique, but long enough to give a good casting distance (8-9 feet long).

*Small children will need a shorter rod because of their height.
In wooded areas, or those with a lot of surrounding brush, choose a shorter rod.

*In wide open spaces, where you would be most likely to fly fish, choose a longer rod.

*To catch larger, more aggressive fish you will need a stronger, shorter rod.
