We will seek to address effective communication over the next few weeks but start today with a common failing of Managers and Supervisors who unfortunately tend to speak to their staff only when something is wrong, something needs to be corrected or there is a need to discipline staff. That unfortunately creates the wrong atmosphere where staff become tense and edgy whenever they see a Manager/Supervisor approaching or see a call or an email or other written communication from the Manager/Supervisor-because that is the only time they hear from the Supervisor/Manager.

Company Culture is set by the level of tolerance allowed by the leadership team or in leadership positions with power and influence.

So a toxic work place becomes so because the leaders allow it, ignore it, believe it's ok and or are unaware (in some cases).

Promoting a healthy working culture is just more that stating the company values and behaviour expectations in a n employee handbook or company website. You as a leader have to actively and continously demonstrate it by leading by example.

This infographic is great summary of ways you could start to eliminate a toxic work culture in a company. Use it as a reference but tailor it to the toxic behaviour at work.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
We talk thus making noise but do we really communicate effectively? We need to first always remember the Context in which that communication is carried out. Secondly remember that the communication process is circular. It starts with a Sender -who codes and sends the Message-the Medium used to send the message- the Receiver who receives and decodes the message-and the Response back to the Sender. If that circle is broken at any point the communication is incomplete and therefore ineffective.
