As HR Professionals we should seek to prepare in advance for union negotiations. Our Strategic Plan should also include planning for such negotiations and managing these relationships to avoid the escalation of conflicts.

Without preparation, negotiation is reactive and not proactive. Also aim for an interest based approach when negotiating, rather than a position based approach, which leads to both sides sticking to their position and not being willing to explore alternative options.
