Earlier this month, the Caribbean Cultural Diplomats Experience returned for its fourth year. Industry 360 and founder Tenille Clarke welcomed an invitation-only gathering of tastemakers, thought-leaders, and industry professionals during CultureCon Week in New York City.

Every October, the Kwéyòl (Creole)-speaking Caribbean celebrates key elements of what makes it so special: the language, the food, the music, the fabric, and yes, the stories.

This examines Mwa Ewitaj Kwéyòl AKA Creole Heritage Month. It's a month-long celebration observed across Saint Lucia, Dominica, Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and the diaspora. The month begins in late September and builds to Jounen Kwéyòl (Creole Day) on 25th October.

The Kwéyòl language is French-based with deep African structural influences. It is shaped by islands that changed colonial hands multiple times. A European langauage might be official, but Kwéyòl is cultural. The code-switching between them is the fluency of a people who have always operated across linguistic worlds.

This week, the First Peoples of Trinidad and Tobago mark their Heritage Week, leading up to Heritage Day on 14 October.

Across Arima, Port of Spain, and other communities, a series of events honours the history and culture of the island's Indigenous people.

Sacred traditions are shared, like the Smoke Ceremony and the Water Ritual. Indigenous street parades are held in which members of other Indigenous tribes, religious bodies, and the public are invited to participate.

At CMS, we believe that honouring Caribbean excellence means honouring all of its origins. Let's honour them together.

Today, we as Raggamuffin. graces the Sunday pages of the Trinidad Guardian and takes T&T sounds to new audiences as billboard’s Caribbean Up-And-Comer for September 2026.

For an artiste whose music is deeply connected to his Caribbean identity - with collaborations with producer powerhouses such as TANO and Yo Brooklyn Done Dem ! - the recognition carries significance beyond career advancement.

In his latest with T&T Guardian, Coutain says he wants to help create opportunities for emerging artistes and to demonstrate the breadth of music talent that exists within the region.

“A long-term goal for me is to reach a place where I could help the next generation and show the world that the Caribbean has so much to offer,” he said in the interview. “We have stars living right here.”

The way we speak and the way we celebrate add more to the story.

This continues our examination of Trinidad and Tobago's multicultural identity through language and festivals.

Creole, our nation language, is a linguistical melting pot. African languages contributed rhythm, vocabulary, and the structure of everyday speech. French Patois left behind words like macco and maljo. Indian Bhojpuri gave us didi, bhai, and the language of family and faith. Spanish layers are preserved in place names and musical culture. Indigenous, Chinese, and Middle Eastern influences still echo in our lexicon.

Our festivals are where this fusion erupts into the open. Born from French masquerade and African Canboulay resistance, Carnival is now fully multi-ethnic. Hosay, originally a Shia Muslim commemoration, features tassa drummers and tadjahs constructed by community members. Divali transforms the entire country, with citizens of all backgrounds lighting deyas. African Emancipation Day and the Santa Rosa Festival honour African and Indigenous heritage.

We go beyond celebrating diversity to celebrating each other's traditions. And we do it like nowhere else does.
