What is passive fire protection, and why does it matter?

Passive fire protection (PFP) refers to the built-in features within a building that help contain or slow the spread of fire and smoke.

Unlike active systems such as alarms or sprinklers, PFP is always working in the background - helping to protect escape routes, give people time to evacuate, and support fire and rescue services.

At Firesafe, our work includes the installation of fire-resisting walls, floors, doors and ceilings, together with specialist passive fire protection systems including pe*******on sealing, cavity barriers, fire dampers, structural encasement and intumescent coatings.

These systems play a vital role in protecting lives, ensuring compliance, and reducing property damage in the event of a fire.

🚪Important update in fire door safety

A new fire door standard has been introduced, replacing previous guidance and raising expectations across the industry.

🔍 Key changes:
• Applies to full fire door systems, not just timber doors
• Covers a wider range of materials including steel, aluminium and glazed systems
• Greater focus on proven performance through testing and certification
• Clearer guidance on installation, sealing, and smoke control
• Aligned with current legislation, including the Building Safety Act

Fire doors are critical to maintaining compartmentation and protecting escape routes. When correctly specified, installed and maintained, they help contain fire and smoke, giving occupants valuable time to evacuate safely.
