Today, Ghana marks Founders' Day, while the world comes together for World Cleanup Day. It's a moment to reflect on what it means to build, protect and take responsibility for the places we call home.

Founders' Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the vision of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the spirit of nation-building that has shaped Ghana's journey.

That spirit of nation-building does not belong only to the past. It challenges each generation to ask: what are we doing with what we have inherited, and what kind of Ghana are we leaving behind?

Our beaches, waters, communities and natural resources are part of that inheritance.
Protecting them is not just an environmental responsibility; it is a responsibility to one another and to the generations that come after us.

And that is where World Cleanup Day becomes especially meaningful.
Cleaning a beach may seem like a small act, but it represents something bigger: taking responsibility for the places we call home.

At CHAiNT Afrique, through initiatives such as NetCYCLE, we work with communities to recover End of Life fishing gear and keep valuable materials in circulation, because protecting our environment requires more than awareness. It requires participation, collaboration and action.

As we celebrate Ghana's journey, we are also reminded that the future of this country is something we all have a role in shaping.

A cleaner Ghana.

A loan can look sound on paper and still carry risks the numbers don't show.

A borrower may have strong financials, a good repayment history and a promising business model. But what happens when climate exposure affects its operations? When new environmental regulations increase its costs? When weak governance creates a risk that was never reflected in the original assessment?

By the time those risks become visible in the financials, the bank may already be exposed.

That is where ESG becomes a banking issue.

Not because it is the latest sustainability conversation.
Not because it makes a good section in an annual report.

But because the decisions banks make today determine the risks they carry tomorrow.

And increasingly, those decisions are being shaped by ESG.

A credit team assessing a borrower.
A risk team evaluating portfolio exposure.
A compliance team interpreting new reporting requirements.
An investment team assessing where capital is being placed.

A leadership team deciding where the institution will be in five or ten years.

ESG is already sitting inside these decisions, whether the institution calls it ESG or not.

The real question is whether the people making those decisions have the knowledge and tools to recognise the risks early enough to act.

That is where capacity becomes critical.

At CHAiNT Afrique, we help financial institutions build that capacity through practical, function-specific ESG training, advisory and consulting, equipping teams to understand ESG risks and integrate them into the decisions they already make.

Because ESG readiness isn't about creating another department.

It's about strengthening the decisions that protect capital, manage risk and build institutional resilience.

This year, Chaint Afrique and NetCYCLE Africa have received the GOT BAG CARE Collective Fund award, fellowship support through Acumen, a place on the Ocean Hub Africa accelerator, membership of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, and now an invitation to join the Circular Valley Accelerator in Wuppertal, Germany.

Written out like that, it reads like a year of achievement. It was not. It was a year of showing up.

I keep thinking about where this work actually sits. Nets pulled out of the water at Anomabo. Conversations on a beach with fishers who had no reason to trust that anything would come of it. Weight tickets. Community meetings nobody photographed. A small team doing unglamorous things for a long time with no guarantee that anyone was watching.

Grace is what you receive that you did not earn. Favour is the door you did not open.

We have had both this year, and I would rather name it plainly than quietly take the credit. To the women and young people in our coastal communities who did the actual work — thank you. To the team who kept going when the funding was uncertain and the days were long — thank you. To every partner who said yes before there was much evidence to say yes to — thank you.

None of it means we have arrived. It means more people are now watching what we do with it.

We are not finished. We are just further along than we had any right to be.

To God be the glory.
