Farmers Connect calls on the logistics industry for support in reducing food waste and hunger.:

Farmers Connect, a leading agrifood supply entry, is drawing attention to the critical role of logistics in reducing food waste and hunger. With over 1.3 million tonnes of edible food wasted annually, while 15 million people are on the spectrum of food vulnerability, Farmers Connect is working to bridge the gap by rescuing food from farms and distributing.

An urgent need has arisen to transport foods from farms to communities for consumption and affordable, support orphanages and charity.

Nelson Mandela, Head of marketing / projects of Farmers Connect says, donation of the fruit is just one piece of the food rescue puzzle. It is a massive logistical undertaking to transport tonnes of fruit every week from farms to consuming market and charity. We are calling on the logistics and transport industry to support us in ensuring that these foods reaches orphanages and markets. We are grateful to have secured support from an NGO (4H Ghana), who are providing truck for the first 20 weeks of this joint venture in food supply, and from mini plast, who have supplied crates.

Nelson Mandela explains that the bulk of food loss and waste is associated with processing and packaging, with 49% lost, followed by 19% lost during the post-harvest handling and storage phase.
Farmers Connect supplies seeds and fertilizers to farmers (on credit) and buyback produce package and supply to consumers. Farmers Connect works with farmers, manufacturers and retailers to rescue this food and redirect it to charity and beneficiaries who convert it into nutritious meals.

Logistics plays a crucial role in Farmers Connect food rescue operations, from coordinating with food donors to collecting and transporting surplus food to ensuring the safe and efficient distribution of the food to local community organizations and charities.

Our database driven website farmersconnect.net platform is being built to enhance the logistics capability, which will help maximize the efficiency of the entire food rescue supply chain. The platform will allow for knowledge and data sharing with NGOs and other key stakeholders and bring about the collaboration needed to build solutions. This empowers how we tackle the problem of food waste and eventually scale sufficiently for our industry to be more effective.

Supporting farmers and what you eat:

Farmers seek support to improve infrastructure facilities like pack-houses and cold storage.
Eastern Region is a true 'fruit and vegetable basin', as it has more fruits and vegetable growing there. it lacks infrastructure facilities like cold storages, warehouses and processing plants. Packaging houses, ripening chambers and a host of amenities are required for marketing the. In shorts, the region needs common facility centres where all fruit and veggies farmers can connect with processing facilities and export agencies.

Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is ‘equivalent to walking 4,000 extra steps a day’:

New research suggests that eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains could be as good for your heart as walking 4,000 extra steps a day. The study was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. It aimed to explore the impact that consuming these foods had on physical health.

Participants in the study completed a Harvard semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire so that their dietary habits could be assessed. They also completed a high-intensity fitness assessment, which involved having their oxygen consumption measured while they rode an exercise bike.

“This study provides some of the strongest and most rigorous data thus far to support the connection that better diets may lead to higher fitness,” said study author Michael Mi of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in a statement. “The improvement in fitness we observed in participants with better diets was similar to the effect of taking 4,000 more steps each day.

World's most expensive mango:

The world's most expensive mango, known as 'Miyazaki' and priced at around €3,000 per kg is now being showcased in a three-day-long Mango Festival in India. Farmers in the state of West Bengal grow the expensive variety, named after a city in Japan. Although the variety was first developed in California, it boomed after it was brought to Miyazaki in Japan in the 1980s.

These mangoes, also known as 'egg of the sun' in Japan, and 'red sun' in India, have a distinct purple color as they bud, and turn a brilliant bright red when they ripen. The fruit came to West Bengal when a local first planted a seed near a mosque. The mosque then auctioned the fruit and used the proceeds for development of its facilities. It is now grown in other farms around the region.

Moroccan government cancels value-added tax on agricultural products:

Yesterday, the Moroccan government adopted a decree cancelling the value-added tax on agricultural inputs, seeking to help lower prices of fresh produce and other agrifoods. In the African country, food inflation jumped to 20.1% in February, bringing general inflation to 10.1%, a level unmatched since the 1980s.

The measure is in line with efforts to "stem the sources of inflation and higher prices both for farm produce and for agrifood products.
