ÄŠHÂÏMÂŃ ŤŐ ŤHÈ WŐŘŐĽĎ 2022

Emerging Ghanaian artists can now apply for performance slots at the 2022 Ashaiman To The World Festival (ATTWF) slated for the Saka Saka Park in Accra on 3 September.

Now in its seventh year, the festival is the brainchild of the Burniton Music Group headed by reggae-dancehall singer Stonebwoy. It is held in partnership with BTL Africa, and forms part of the musician’s vision to spotlight undiscovered local talent while celebrating the community he hails from.

To participate, interested young musicians, or their representatives, may send their details to [email protected](link sends e-mail) or call +233 54 545 2812.

The deadline for applications is 2 September.

“Primarily, this is an opportunity for me to shine a spotlight on the town [Ashaiman] and its people that helped shape me into the successful creative artist today,” Stonebwoy told Music In Africa. “By giving back to the society, the platform also serves as an opportunity to expose new talents from the community to the world.”

Ahead of the main concert, organisers say this year’s ATTWF will be heralded by a series of activities including sporting events, cultural activities, and free health screening for Ashaiman residents, among other CSR activities.

On where he hopes to take the festival in the coming years, Stonebwoy disclosed his ambition to “continue to grow it and have it become an international festival where we can bring down some artist exchange.”

Meanwhile, Stonebwoy, who joined Def Jam Africa in May, is expected to drop a new album, titled Album 5, in the coming months. Ahead of the project, the musician, has released a new single titled ‘Therapy

Hanifa Abubakar was kidnapped outside an Islamic school she also attended

A high court in the northern Nigerian city of Kano has sentenced a primary school owner and his friend to death by hanging for the kidnapping and subsequent killing of a five-year-old pupil.

Abdulmalik Tanko and his friend Hashimu Isiyaku were found guilty on Thursday.

A woman, said to be Mr Tanko’s ex-girlfriend, has been sentenced to two years in prison for complicity in the kidnapping.

The convicts had pleaded guilty and asked for leniency during the passing of the sentence.

Death penalties are rarely carried out in Nigeria and those convicted tend to stay in prison indefinitely.

The two men abducted the girl in December 2021 and her body was discovered in January this year.

The kidnapping of Hanifa Abubakar sparked outrage across Nigeria.

Tanko had demanded a ransom of $14,600 (£12,000) from the victim’s parents.

He was arrested by the police and he then led detectives to a location where they had buried the girl’s body.

In recent years, Nigeria has been grappling with a widespread kidnapping crisis.

Ghana 3-0 Benin: Hearts of Oak trio inspire Black Galaxies to victory in CHAN qualifiers

Hearts of Oak trio Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Mohammed Alhassan and Gladson Awako scored to inspire Ghana to victory over Benin in Cape Coast on Sunday in the first leg of their 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying tie.

The Black Galaxies won 3-0 and will enter the return leg confident of reaching the final round of Western Zone B qualifiers.

Ghana made a strong start, and their pressure paid off in the 25th minute when Barnieh scored a penalty to put Galaxies ahead.

Medeama’s Jonah Attuaquaye scored in the 36th minute, but it was controversially ruled out for offside, as Ghana won the first half 1-0.

Ghana players came out for the second half with a positive attitude, and it only took them five minutes to double their lead thanks to Alhassan’s great finish inside the box.

Captain Awako sealed the victory with a late third.

The second leg is scheduled for Saturday, July 30 in Porto-Novo, with the winner of the tie facing Nigeria in the final round.

Ghana are looking to return to the Championship after missing the last three editions. Black Galaxies finished second twice in the first three editions.

Cool down, my brother – Ken Agyapong warns Wontumi

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has issued a salvo to the Ashanti Region Chairman of the party to stay calm in the face of internal elections.

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency said it was wrong for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and 15 other regional chairmen to openly declare support for a candidate.

“The signal is clear to every senior member of the party not to come openly and raise hands,” he said while speaking in an interview with Media General‘s Eric Mawuena Egbeta at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, July 17.

“The 15 chairmen and the Central Regional Chairman, where are the 16 chairmen? They should be ashamed of themselves because they couldn’t decide for the party.

“My brother Wontumi should cool down. He should cool down [because] he doesn’t own this party. He doesn’t at all. He has to cool down.”

He explained that Chairman Wontumi cajoled the other chairmen to raise hands openly to support some candidates.

“All of them have been embarrassed. If it had been anywhere, all the chairmen would resigned.”

NPP firebrand Ken Agyapong may have shared these sentiments after the election of Justin Kodua Frimpong as the General Secretary of the party.

Though official results are yet to be declared, supporters of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) boss are already jubilating over the outcome.
