The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and Chairman of the Committee of Chiefs of the Defence Staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama has hosted an Extraordinary Meeting with the Committee's members in Burma Camp.

The two-day meeting on 5 and 6 May 2022 brought together the Chiefs of the Defence Staff of the 15 member states of ECOWAS.

The conference was to discuss the implementation of the recommendations from their 41st Session held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire which was focused on the tackling of the regional security situation arising from terrorist attacks and increased illegal activities at sea. The meeting was also to deliberate on priorities for operational and logistics support and modalities for allocating capacities to member states among others things.

The CDS in his opening address congratulated the participants for their collective efforts and expressed his appreciation for their cooperation and commitment to peace and stability within the sub region.

Vice Admiral Amoama reiterated that the security situation in the sub region continues to pose a challenge to socio-economic development. He further urged the Defence Chiefs to be active in all regional meetings to help develop a solid contingency plan for the progress of the region.

The Special Guest of Honour and Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul, on behalf of the Chairman of ECOWAS and President of the Republic of Ghana said the forum was also to offer the regional bodies the opportunity to dialogue on defence and security matters affecting the sub-region. He spoke on prioritizing the maintenance of peace and security in the various jurisdictions and encouraged the Defence Chiefs to play a pivotal role in shaping defence and security policies to achieve the desired objective of peace.
