As a young chap I was extremely timid with poor social skills and was dismissed as the least likely to succeed among my siblings and peers. I believed it. I accepted that my place was to watch others live their lives and wish I was like them.
In Secondary School I found myself standing at a window of the school’s assembly hall watching members of the drama troupe rehearsing a play. I remained at the window for three and half weeks simply watching and never joined in.
One day, about a week or two to the production , the main character didn’t turn up for rehearsal, in despair the director looked round and saw me at the window. He asked me to come and read the lines so the other casts could rehearse.
Ten minutes into the rehearsal he realised I wasn’t reading the script at all, I knew the lines and stage movements. Over time, as I watched them rehearse, I had learnt the lines and the movement. Suffice to say I got to play the lead role in the final play.

That afternoon changed my life forever. I had discovered that those who had dismissed my place at the table were wrong; I had discovered that I had a place in the room; I had discovered that I had hidden talent for acting and I was eager to find out what more I had hidden inside me.
I learnt a few things from that event and from the quest to find myself that began that day and I will to share in the next post.

This week, for the rest of this year, please don’t only be an observer of life and those living and making things happen.
