- Majority of HIV patients have been reported to have a prolonged and healthy normal life because of antiretroviral treatment (ART).
Interviews with pharmacists indicate that antiretroviral treatment expand the life expectancy of HIV patients by reducing the viral loads in each patients. Hence the urge for every patients to get enrol on the treatment.
Mr Godwin Kwashivi, a pharmacist at the ROHI PHARMACY LIMITED in Osu and a physician at the Korle-Bu Hospital in an interview said that about 60% of HIV patients now have a near-normal life expectancy thanks to antiretroviral treatment.
“The antiretroviral drugs when taking accordingly prevent the HIV virus from replicating itself to cause more damage to its victim and stabilises the patient’s condition”, he explained.
Mr. Kwashivi added that most people do not know that they have the virus because they remain undiagnosed and before they realise their nearing their graves.

Modern Day Bead-making

Bead-making in Ghana today has taken on a different dimension compared to the traditional beading styles that existed before due to modernization.
Bead-making and beads usage have become an inseparable aspect of Ghanaians especially among the youth. Today, dressing with beads is spotted almost under every function and on special occasions.
Speaking to some bead-making entrepreneurs, they reported that the indigenous “Krobo” beads that existed before is gradually taken over by western glass and acrylic beads as well as ceramic and wooden beads.
The “Krobo” beads which is now losing its market, tend to be very heavy in weight and more durable even though sometimes it appears to have dull colours compared to the western glassy beads.
According to bead-making entrepreneurs “the “Krobo” beads are recently used by the old Ghanaian folks especially chiefs and queens and is mostly purchased during African Union day and other national and local festivities. They have not lose their cultural value”
The western glass and acrylic beads are lighter in weight but appear to be very glamourous and shiny. Other beads includes straw beads, paper beads, metal beads and they all appear to be very colourful.
Most youth prefer these new exquisite beads than the “Krobo” ones because of their glamorous nature even though they might not last long enough.
However, some bead-making entrepreneurs blend the “Krobo” beads and the western acrylic beads to produce more elegant and appealing jewelleries and other items to the public.
Ms. Rejoice Dogber, bead-making entrepreneur of “Deveila GH” stated; “you must be good with colour and bead combination as a bead maker”, adding that it is advisable to combined weird colours which are unusual on the market in order to create a uniqueness in design.
Beads are now used to manufacture bags, bracelets and all forms of jewelleries and also to design foot wears, hairs and clothing.
There are waist beads which are different from the “Krobo” beads and are also used recently for making necklaces, anklets, bracelets among others.

The Difference is the PEN

The PEN make a very significant impact in our lives. However, the ordinary Blackman is out of bounds to experience this impact. To be able to make a pen mark requires that one reads a lot. Reading helps one to cultivate the habit of writing. So you see why I say 'the Blackman hasn't experience the impact of the pen mark', we are not all that engrossed in reading.
This takes my mind off to what the great Philosopher said, "if you want to hide something from the Blackman, put it in a book".
Indeed this saying has travelled far to be true even though recent times have seen some black men doing otherwise. Most things happening around us requires that we know about them and work on. The question however is 'how do we work on them without reading to know about them and perhaps write about them. It's only when we start writing about things that we desire to change that the change can be effected. Reading also widen up our intellectual ability that can help us write better, embrace it now. The time is now, seek knowledge and build your thinking capacity. Use the PEN mark to make the desired difference.

Abuse of School Children

In the comfort zone of my room, I've been contemplating on why school children are still been abused in some village schools.
Some years back, around 2005, sometimes we were asked to bring gravels(stones) to school for being late. But then the purpose of those stones wasn't devastating compared to that of today's 21st century. Those stones were used to prevent erosion as well as to cover up muddy areas.
Notwithstanding the fact that I have no problem with pupils working for their tutors, I find it very odd when I paid a visit to a village in Suhum and discovered that pupils were asked to bring firewoods to school. And to make it worse, most often they are expected to bring along stones as well in this 21st century.
My curiosity did not allow me to rest and so I decided to find out the purpose of these constant collection of firewoods and stones.
Talking to some pupils of the school, they told me that, the firewoods are collected for the tutors. They further told me that the tutors who use gas cookers, collect the firewoods and sell them.
So I asked myself whether it's right for tutors to use school children for such tasks. I got more worried when I attended one of their PTA meetings and realised that some parents who don't have farms in the area were complaining bitterly. Why? Because when they buy firewoods to use, their children steal them and send them to school in order to avoid being punished.
Won't you ask me the purpose of the stones? Obviously, same purpose, for sale. Believe me, whenever my cousin, Isaac who is in class five wakes up, the first thing to come to his mind is fetching of stones before even thinking of his assignments. Not to talk of how dirty they look after fetching the stones.
Ever since I returned from vacation, I've been in a dilemma, as to why the authorities are adamant on the issue. I've been wondering; has it not been brought to their notice, or perhaps it's of no interest to them.
My love for humanity will not allow me rest, so ple-ase something needs to be done. Share for change to be effected.
