What is the purpose of a business plan?

You’ve probably heard a thousand and one times that a business plan is the roadmap of a business.

That is absolutely true. A business plan guides you through each stage of your business. It actually forces you to think about your business in a way that you may never do. Some of the things that working on a business plan will get you thinking about include:

1. The long-term goals of your business. Putting down the goals of your business encourages you to work smarter and harder to ensure their realization.

2. Your competition. We have always believed that it’s easy to be number one (1). All you’ve got to do is identify the number one (1) brand in your industry and score a point higher. Working on your business plan forces you to think about your competitors and identify what they may be missing.

3. Your target market. Developing a business plan will help you gain a wider and deeper understanding of your market. You would know by now that a business idea without a ready market is already a failed venture.

4. Finances. A business plan will help you determine how much capital you need to start and sustain your business.

Moreover, every investor requires a formal business plan before (s)he decides whether to invest in a venture or not.

If you don’t see the need for any of the above mentioned points, you should by all means abort any plans of developing a business plan in order to save yourself valuable resources.

While a business plan is the roadmap of your business, it is never meant to be a one-off document.

It must be reviewed periodically, with its assumptions challenged and altered based on changes in the economy and in your circumstances.

One key circumstance is the fact that the policies favouring or hindering your business may change and render your original plan worthless.

For instance, a business plan for a paper packaging business in Ghana will have to be reviewed if the Government announces it’s intention to ban the use of plastic bags and vice versa.

How long does it take to produce good content?

Well... good things take time and content is no exception. If you want good content that will elicit the ‘Where do I sign up?’ response from your target, you should be patient, otherwise you can get it soon enough but it won’t yield much.

Don’t rush it because your competition uploads content every now and then. Make sure that your content resonates with your target group, or you’re better off without it.

After all, quality over quantity any day.
